My 2018 Australian Odyssey

Your Ultimate Australia Travel Guide: A 10-Day Adventure Through Melbourne, Adelaide & Sydney

Australia, a land of unparalleled beauty and diverse experiences, has always topped my travel wish list. The mere thought of encountering its iconic wildlife—playing with kangaroos, snorkeling the vibrant Great Barrier Reef, and cuddling adorable koalas—stirred a lifelong fascination within me. I even dreamed of having a wallaby as a pet, a dream only solidified by this incredible journey. So, when Qantas extended an invitation to partner on a sponsored trip, exploring three distinct Australian cities, it felt almost surreal. Especially with it coinciding so closely with my birthday, it was truly the trip of a lifetime!

The core objective of this collaboration was to generate awareness for Qantas Explorer, an innovative program specifically designed to encourage millennial travelers to discover the affordability and ease of domestic travel within Australia, all while spotlighting the country’s exceptional food and wine scene. Naturally, embracing such an enticing opportunity was an easy decision—I was wholeheartedly on board!

This adventure truly embraced spontaneity. My travel companion, Bridger, and I received our flight confirmations a mere two days before our departure from the States—a detail that typically would have sent my Type A personality into a frenzy. However, this trip was different. Everything, from our Airbnb and hotel stays to travel excursions and winery tours, was booked no more than 48 hours in advance. This experience unexpectedly taught me the immense joy and liberation of spontaneous travel. As I recount the packed itinerary of this Australian “tour”—a fitting term given how much we experienced in such a short timeframe—I’m filled with excitement to share every detail of our unforgettable journey!

Of course, a last-minute trip isn’t complete without packing the day before you leave! I’ll soon be sharing a comprehensive list of my essential travel items for long-haul journeys and diverse climates.

Our grand tour commenced with a flight from Seattle to LAX, where we boarded what would become the longest flight of my life: a remarkable 15.5-hour journey to Melbourne. Initially, I harbored a few anxieties: Would I be able to sleep comfortably? Should I attempt fasting to mitigate jet lag and bloat? How would I cope without constant Wi-Fi access? To my delightful surprise, the Qantas flight from LAX to Melbourne proved to be the most comfortable and enjoyable flying experience I’ve ever had. We were fortunate enough to fly in Premium Economy on Qantas’ state-of-the-art Dreamliner plane, an experience I wholeheartedly recommend—it’s absolutely worth the investment! It felt akin to first-class travel, with incredibly friendly Australian flight attendants and an impressively curated menu. I even managed to get a solid seven hours of sleep overnight, leaving me refreshed and ready to explore.

Melbourne, Australia: A City of Culture, Cuisine, and Charm

Day 1: Arrival and Culinary Immersion in St. Kilda

We touched down in Melbourne mid-morning, brimming with anticipation. A convenient bus ride took us to our Airbnb in the vibrant suburb of St. Kilda, leaving us the remainder of the day to explore. Melbourne immediately struck us as a youthful, hip, and incredibly accessible city, with a bustling atmosphere that was both engaging and easy to navigate.

Our first order of business, as always, was food. Melbourne proved to be a veritable haven for healthy, wholesome cuisine, offering an astounding array of options. So extensive was the healthy food scene that I barely scratched the surface of my curated list of recommendations! While I’ll provide a more detailed list of my favorite eats, activities, beaches, and wineries for each city later, a few standout food spots in Melbourne included:

  • Short Straw: Everything on their menu was exceptional.
  • Matcha Mylkbar: Famous for its matcha creations, including delicious matcha pancakes and an innovative vegan egg with a sweet potato and turmeric “yolk.”
  • Serotonin Dealer: A must-visit for incredible raw desserts, treats, and nourishing smoothies.
  • Tall Timber: Consistently excellent, no matter what you order.
  • Legacy Camberwell: Perfect for a refreshing poké bowl or perfectly prepared avocado toast.
  • Grill’d: Offering grass-fed burgers, fantastic vegetarian options, low-carb buns, and unforgettable thick-cut sweet potato fries.
  • Gilson: Their half roast chicken was a highlight.
  • MOM Café: Known for their delectable bliss balls.

I was incredibly fortunate to meet the inspiring “girlboss” owners behind Matcha Mylkbar and Serotonin Dealer. Both cafés boast unique and compelling backstories, and I left each establishment feeling profoundly inspired. Their passion not only ignited my desire to share more nutrition and wellness knowledge but also reinforced the importance of dreaming big and relentlessly pursuing one’s aspirations in life. (A personal note: the raw treats at Serotonin Dealer are truly out of this world—I’m still dreaming about them!)

Day 2: Lakeside Runs, Market Finds, and Yarra Valley Wines

Our second day began with a refreshing run around Albert Lake, conveniently located near our accommodation. For me, running is an unbeatable way to soak in the atmosphere of a new city. Fortuitously, it was Saturday, and a lively local market was in full swing, featuring an array of tents with the sparkling beach as a backdrop—my idea of a perfect Saturday morning. I even managed to find a beautiful piece of artwork from a local artist to adorn our new apartment.

After the market, we picked up a rental car and embarked on a scenic hour-long drive northeast to the picturesque Yarra Valley. The most challenging part of this excursion was undoubtedly adjusting to driving on the opposite side of the car and the road! I gladly enlisted Bridger as our designated driver for this novel experience.

The Stones of the Yarra Valley marked our first winery visit of the trip, and it immediately captivated us with its breathtaking beauty and charm. It’s not just a winery, but an entire precinct encompassing beautifully repurposed buildings: stables and a barn transformed into a chic café and bar, a dairy house converted into an idyllic chapel, and their newest addition, a delightful wood-fired pizza restaurant and bar. The picturesque setting, combined with exceptional wines, made for an unforgettable afternoon.

That evening, we unwound on the beach, mesmerized by the sunset and watching dozens of kite-surfers glide across the ocean for hours. We then picked up a delicious dinner from Gilson’s to enjoy back at our Airbnb, perfectly rounding off a day of exploration and indulgence.

Day 3: Iconic Beach Boxes, Sunburn Woes, and Raw Treat Heaven

Our third day started with an Uber ride to Brighton Beach to witness the famously colorful Brighton Beach Boxes. These quaint, vibrantly painted shacks line the beach, creating a truly iconic Australian scene. While the boxes were magnificent, the Australian summer sun was relentless, and despite our precautions, we left with a significant sunburn. A crucial public service announcement: never underestimate the Australian sun during summer months! My American “organic” sunscreen proved utterly ineffective, resulting in a painful 2-3 day burn. Invest in the local 50 SPF Aussie sunscreen—it’s non-negotiable.

Another important lesson we quickly learned: many establishments in Australia, especially on weekends, tend to close quite early. This might seem minor, but when you’re traveling, returning from a full-day excursion, or still grappling with a new time zone, it can be incredibly frustrating. It almost led to a few “hanger-induced” tears on my part! Seriously though, be prepared and plan your meals and activities ahead of time.

The absolute highlight of this day was our spontaneous stop at Serotonin Dealer on our return from the beach. Emily, the inspiring owner, had kindly reached out via Instagram and invited us to enjoy some of her incredible raw treats and smoothies. What made this even more special was that it was their day off, and she came in after hours specifically to spoil us with goodies! Every dessert was gluten-free, dairy-free, grain-free, and refined sugar-free—essentially, my personal paradise. I was deeply moved by the café’s mission, which focuses on promoting happiness and well-being through nutritious food. You can delve deeper into their inspiring story on their website here.

Two additional must-dos in Melbourne that come highly recommended:

  • Explore the Royal Botanic Gardens: Initially, this suggestion didn’t capture my immediate attention, but I am incredibly glad we made time for it. The gardens are an absolute wonderland, offering a magical and serene escape from the city bustle. I particularly recommend experiencing them in the early evening as the light softens.
  • Visit St. Kilda Pier at Dusk: Head to St. Kilda pier around dusk (typically between 7:45-8:30 pm during summer) to witness the enchanting return of the little penguins to land after a day of fishing. We managed to spot two adorable penguins, and it was a truly heartwarming sight! If a trip down the coast to Phillip Island for a larger penguin colony isn’t feasible, this local experience is a wonderful alternative.

Day 4: A Last Taste of Melbourne and Departure to Adelaide

Our final morning in Melbourne began with a return visit to Tall Timber, a café so delicious we couldn’t resist a second round. This time, we opted for takeaway to enjoy on our SkyBus ride to the airport. Their Aussie folded eggs are simply the best, and their shakshuka and French toast are equally amazing.

Travel Tip: For convenient and affordable airport transfers, utilize the SkyBus service. It costs approximately $19 per person each way between the city and the airport.

Adelaide, Australia: Quaint Charms and Wine Country Wonders

Upon arriving in Adelaide, I immediately noticed a distinct change in pace. It possessed a quieter, more intimate “small city” vibe compared to bustling Melbourne. While its healthy food scene was slightly less extensive, Adelaide proudly boasts the internationally renowned Barossa Valley, making it a prime destination for wine lovers.

Our very first stop in Adelaide was Nutrition Republic, an organic espresso and elixir bar that instantly impressed us with its comprehensive menu. Offering everything from superfood smoothies and various toasts to specialty superfood lattes, paleo granola, eggs, fresh juices, and an array of raw treats and organic chocolates, it was truly a health food paradise. I honestly wished I could have tried one of everything!

Day 5: Spontaneous Coastal Exploration and Cliff Jumping Thrills

Day 5 proved to be arguably the most spontaneous day of our entire trip. With no concrete plans beyond breakfast at Nutrition Republic (which we happily revisited), a recommendation from our waitress led us to rent a car and head to Second Valley, a local’s secret beach. This hidden gem was a tropical dream: crystal-clear aqua waters, a wonderfully relaxed beach atmosphere, and even a secluded spot perfect for cliff jumping. It’s easy to see why this spot isn’t frequently mentioned on typical travel blogs or “things to do in Adelaide” Google searches—the locals clearly prefer to keep it under wraps! Despite the scorching 100°F heat, I felt a surge of adventurous spirit and decided to cool off with a leap from the 30-foot cliff. It was an exhilarating and unforgettable experience!

On our way back, we made a stop at Goodies and Grains, a fantastic health food shop and juice bar nestled within the bustling Adelaide Central Market. Browsing organic markets and health food stores is one of my favorite activities, whether I’m traveling or at home. I love discovering new products, local brands, and simply soaking in the vibrant atmosphere (I could easily spend hours in a Whole Foods!). We also quickly visited the Plant 4 Bowden market, which buzzes with multiple food stalls, another Nutrition Republic café, and various jewelry and clothing vendors on Wednesdays (4-9 pm) and Saturdays (9 am-3 pm).

Upon returning to our accommodation, I made sure to fit in a workout at a local gym. Travel Tip: Many gyms offer complimentary 3-day, 7-day, or even 2-week passes for first-time visitors, which is perfect for travelers. Otherwise, most fitness passes, class-pass options, or day passes typically range from $5 to $35 per visit or class. Personally, I find working out while on vacation incredibly beneficial. It helps me maintain my routine, provides an energetic start to the day, and makes me feel much better about indulging in all the delicious local eats!

Day 6: Barossa Valley Wine Tasting Extravaganza

Day 6 kicked off with a truly delicious breakfast at Whistle & Flute—a charming spot with an incredibly good menu. On a side note, a quick public service announcement: be aware that many places in Australia have strict “no modification” policies for their menu items. As someone accustomed to customizing my meals to fit specific preferences (perhaps an American thing!), this can be a bit of a bummer, so consider yourself warned!

The highlight of our Adelaide stay was undoubtedly our full-day wine tasting tour in the Barossa Valley. We booked a private tour with Amazing Wine Tours, and it exceeded all expectations. Bridger and I had the pleasure of sampling exquisite wines at several prestigious wineries:

  • St. Hugo: Known for its exceptional premium wines and elegant cellar door.
  • Chateau Tanunda: Here, we savored their premium selection and were even gifted a bottle from 2015, crafted from vines over a century old—a truly special memento.
  • Seppeltsfield Winery: An iconic estate where we experienced the rare opportunity to sample wine straight from the barrel, dating back to 1918. This was my very first winery tour, and I learned an immense amount about viticulture and winemaking history!

Each winery offered a distinct character and was steeped in fascinating history. If you’re seeking a personalized, private tour of the Barossa Valley, I cannot recommend Amazing Wine Tours highly enough. Our driver, George, was absolutely fantastic—knowledgeable, attentive, and incredibly accommodating. He ensured everything ran seamlessly, chauffeuring us to and from each winery, happily capturing photos of our experiences, and even stopping spontaneously on a beautiful palm tree-lined road for more photo opportunities. His insights added immense value to our day.

Day 7: Healthy Start and Farewell to Adelaide

Our last morning in Adelaide began with a walk, luggage in hand, back to the Adelaide Central Market. Our mission: to find a healthy breakfast before our flight. Fortunately, we stumbled upon Jamu, a super charming and health-focused café. Jamu offered an impressive array of superfood smoothies, nourishing bowls, delicious bliss balls (Australia truly embraces its raw bliss balls—I swear I saw them everywhere and was excited every single time!), chia puddings, coconut yogurt, fresh juices, and potent ginger + turmeric shots. We both opted for a turmeric shot before our flight, a personal habit I love for boosting my immune system on travel days.

Sydney, Australia: Iconic Sights and Coastal Living

Day 7: Arrival in Sydney and Bondi Junction Exploration

Our third Qantas flight of the trip brought us to our final destination: Sydney. Opting for public transportation, we took a bus to our hotel in Bondi Junction, a cost-effective choice at just $4.60 for two people. Upon arrival, Bridger and I made sure to hit the hotel gym before venturing out. Fitting in a quick workout isn’t always easy when traveling, but utilizing those small windows of opportunity ensures you stay energized and can fully enjoy the rest of your day.

The weather in Sydney that day was surprisingly grey and windy, yet incredibly hot. We enjoyed dinner at Bill’s by Bondi Beach, savoring the atmosphere before strolling through the local shops. Our evening exploration was cut short, however, when a dramatic thunderstorm rolled in, complete with heavy downpours and lightning.

Day 8: Bondi Beach, Iconic Icebergs, and Poké Perfection

Day 8 began with another invigorating workout, followed by one of the best meals of our entire trip at Speedo’s Cafe. Perched overlooking the magnificent Bondi Beach, the view from our table was simply stunning on what had transformed into a beautiful day. Being Saturday, the vibrant farmer’s market was in full swing, offering a bounty of fresh produce, delicious pressed juices, local crafts, and artisanal coffee. I highly recommend a visit to soak in the lively local culture.

The iconic Bondi Icebergs pools have been on my bucket list for years. Their captivating images frequently circulate on Instagram, leaving me eager to witness their beauty in person. Seeing the waves crash into the striking white pools against the deep blue ocean was even more spectacular than I had imagined.

That night, we dined at Fishbowl, enjoying our meal near an outdoor cinema in the park. While I thought the poké at Bill’s the day before was good, Fishbowl elevated the experience to an entirely new level. Their completely customizable bowls allowed for endless combinations tailored to personal preferences, solidifying my adoration for poké bowls!

Day 9: My 25th Birthday in Sydney – Coastal Trails, Ferries, and Manly Beach

February 11th—my 25th birthday! There was no better way to start this special day than with a run along the picturesque Bondi to Bronte trail, incorporating some circuit workouts amidst the stunning coastal scenery. Following our workout, we enjoyed a delightful breakfast at Preach Cafe. My ideal meal consisted of a medley of sides: two eggs, creamy avocado, roasted tomatoes, sautéed spinach, and sweet potato, while Bridger indulged in banana pancakes. Pure bliss! After breakfast, we returned to the hotel, packed our bags, and took an Uber into the city for the final two nights of our 10-day adventure.

Our hotel was conveniently located within walking distance of Darling Harbour, a lively hub. From there, we took a ferry to Circular Quay, offering magnificent views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. We then boarded the Manly Fast Ferry for a picturesque 20-minute ride to Manly Beach. Manly Beach was a popular recommendation, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a charming, bustling town, especially vibrant on a Sunday, filled with an array of shops and eateries. I refueled with a wonderfully refreshing smoothie bowl from Bare Naked Bowls—definitely recommended!

We purchased inexpensive towels from a souvenir shop and spent a few blissful hours relaxing on the beach under the warm sun before heading back to the city. Travel Tip: If possible, consider renting lounge chairs on the beach to avoid getting covered in sand from the wind!

On our return, we hoped to visit Bondi Wholefoods for some highly recommended raw treats, but to our disappointment, it was closed! Fortunately, I had stocked up on some Pana Chocolate earlier in the trip, which made for a perfect birthday dessert. Celebrating my 25th birthday in Australia was truly magical, an experience I doubt I’ll ever be able to top!

Day 10: Wildlife Encounters and Hunter Valley Wines

For our last full day in Australia, I scoured Trip Advisor for recommended tours in Sydney and booked a winery and wildlife small group tour. Having yet to see much Australian wildlife up close, it was high time we encountered a kangaroo! (Throughout the trip, I relied heavily on Trip Advisor, Expedia, Hotels Tonight, and Uber for planning and logistics).

Our tour bus picked us up at 7 am and drove about an hour and a half north to the Australian Reptile Park. Here, my childhood dreams came true: I had the incredible opportunity to kiss a baby alligator, gently pet a soft koala, and feed the kangaroos. I could have happily spent the entire day there! It was, without a doubt, my favorite part of the trip and an incredibly fun and heartwarming experience.

The bus then took us another 45 minutes or so further north to the renowned Hunter Valley, where we visited two different wineries. We indulged in more wine tasting, toured their beautiful properties, and enjoyed an amazing two-course lunch (they thoughtfully accommodated my gluten and dairy-free preferences). While the entire 10-hour tour was a bit pricey at $405 USD for two people, it was honestly worth every single penny for the experiences it offered.

Day 11: Final Sydney Moments and Homeward Bound

On our last morning, we made sure to fit in one final workout and packed our belongings. Success! Bondi Wholefoods, previously closed on my birthday, was open, so we eagerly headed there for a delicious breakfast before reluctantly making our way to the airport to catch our flight back to the States.

The journey home proved to be a bit more challenging than our outbound trip. Neither Bridger nor I managed to sleep for more than an hour during our epic 23-hour travel day back to Seattle. Jet lag hit us hard upon arriving home around noon. To expedite our adjustment back to Pacific Standard Time, we consciously pushed ourselves to stay awake throughout the entire day, aiming to fall asleep at our usual bedtime and reset our circadian rhythms. Working out, as always, is another helpful tip for alleviating jet lag symptoms.

Reflections on an Australian Dream

After experiencing the distinct charms of Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney, I must confess that Melbourne and Bondi Beach captured my heart the most. I adored the vibrant energy and cultural richness of both cities, the endless options for healthy and delicious food, and of course, their absolutely stunning beaches. I could easily envision myself living in either location, and I find myself checking real estate listings daily!

I am profoundly grateful for this entire, incredible experience made possible by Qantas Airways. Australia gifted me the time of my life, and celebrating my 25th birthday there felt like a dream come true! I am unequivocally determined to return. And honestly, if you ever have the opportunity to fly with Qantas, do it without hesitation! Throughout our entire journey to and from Australia, we encountered nothing but exceptionally friendly staff, seamless check-ins, and thoroughly enjoyable flights.

Next time, my journey will definitely include a visit to Byron Bay, the one place I truly wished we had more time to explore on this trip.
