The South of France, a region synonymous with sun-kissed glamour, turquoise waters, and timeless charm, had long called to us. My partner, Bridger, had experienced the vibrant energy of Paris and a fleeting moment in Strasbourg during a 2018 Rhine River cruise, but the French Riviera remained an uncharted territory for us both. This trip was destined to be our inaugural deep dive into its captivating beauty. Despite our complete lack of French language skills at the time, navigating the picturesque cities and towns proved surprisingly effortless, thanks to the widespread use of English among locals. With six precious nights allocated for this adventure, I meticulously crafted an itinerary that maximized every moment, and looking back, I wouldn’t change a single detail. We dedicated two unforgettable nights to the legendary St. Tropez, though, in hindsight, an extra night or two there would have been a welcome luxury. Following this, a single night at the breathtaking Les Roches Rouges offered a perfect interlude, allowing us to savour its stunning views and strategically break up our journey towards Nice. Our final three nights were spent soaking in the coastal allure of Nice, creating memories that will forever sparkle in our minds. As we reflect on this incredible journey, our wanderlust is already pulling us towards future explorations of Cannes and Antibes.

Planning Your Journey: Flights & Transportation on the French Riviera

Your unforgettable French Riviera experience typically begins with a flight into Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE), the region’s primary international gateway. From there, your transportation choices will largely dictate your travel experience, balancing convenience with cost. Upon our arrival, we opted for a private car service pre-booked through our hotel, a comfortable yet somewhat lengthy journey of approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes to St. Tropez, especially with typical traffic. It’s worth noting that private transfers in the South of France can be quite an investment.

However, for travelers seeking a more economical and often equally efficient option, public transportation stands out as a fantastic alternative. The train system, in particular, is incredibly quick, reliable, and offers a scenic way to connect between many of the charming coastal towns around Nice. For a more budget-friendly route to St. Tropez, a combination of a train ride to a nearby hub, followed by a short taxi journey, is a highly recommended and popular choice among locals and seasoned travelers alike.

Our subsequent transfers exemplified this mix-and-match approach. From St. Tropez, we again arranged a car through our next hotel, taking us an hour and fifteen minutes to Saint Raphael. From Saint Raphael, a taxi completed our journey to our final destination in Nice. Looking back, my strongest advice for anyone exploring this region is to embrace the train system whenever possible. It’s not just about affordability; it’s about speed, efficiency, and the unparalleled opportunity to witness the stunning landscapes and diverse cities that dot the French Riviera from the comfort of your carriage. Planning your train routes in advance and purchasing tickets online can streamline your travel significantly, making your journey as smooth as the Riviera’s azure waters.

Where to Stay: Curated Accommodations on the Côte d’Azur

St. Tropez: Lou Pinet – A Chic Retreat

For an authentic and luxurious St. Tropez experience, I wholeheartedly recommend Lou Pinet, the exquisite five-star boutique hotel where we stayed. Nestled just a five-minute drive outside the bustling town, this property truly embodies the quintessential French picturesque landscape. It’s a haven of tranquility offering a range of superb amenities, including a refreshing pool, a complete spa by Tata Harper (my absolute favorite for non-toxic skincare, and a significant factor in my booking decision!), a well-equipped small gym, and an absolutely incredible breakfast spread. The on-site Beef Bar restaurant was another highlight, serving delectable dishes that we thoroughly enjoyed. Lou Pinet strikes the perfect balance between serene privacy and convenient access to St. Tropez’s vibrant pulse. While we adored our stay, other highly recommended luxury options in the area include Hotel La Ponche, Hotel Byblos, and Chateau de la Messardiere, each offering its own unique slice of St. Tropez glamor.

Saint Raphael: Les Roches Rouges – Coastal Dreamscape

Our one-night stop at Les Roches Rouges in Saint Raphael was a dream-like experience. This hotel immediately transported me back to The Cape, where Bridger and I exchanged vows in Cabo, Mexico, thanks to its stunning coastal setting. Perched directly on the water’s edge, it boasts two beautiful pools, one of which is a natural saltwater pool, seamlessly blending with the Mediterranean. The ambiance here is super dreamy, making it an ideal spot for a single night’s stay to truly soak in the breathtaking views and luxurious serenity. A crucial tip: definitely secure a room with a water view to maximize the magical experience. While the breakfast was functional rather than spectacular, both the lunch and dinner menus offered delicious culinary delights, making it a truly worthwhile stop on our Riviera journey.

Nice: Le Meridien – Urban Convenience with a View

In Nice, we chose Le Meridien, a choice I’d rate a solid 7/10. Our eighth-floor room provided an incredible panoramic vista of the sparkling water and the bustling city, a truly captivating sight. Its location is undoubtedly one of its strongest assets, placing guests right in the heart of Nice, surrounded by an abundance of restaurants and attractions. However, our personal preference leans towards smaller, more intimate boutique-style hotels, which Le Meridien isn’t. Despite this, I would still recommend it for travelers visiting Nice, primarily because you’ll likely be out exploring the city’s wonders all day long, making the hotel primarily a comfortable base. A definite recommendation: skip the breakfast buffet here; it’s simply not worth the price. Instead, venture out to one of the many charming local cafes for a more authentic and enjoyable start to your day.

A Taste of the French Riviera: Culinary Delights

Our culinary journey through the French Riviera was, as always, a delightful blend of recommendations from my incredible community, our own spontaneous discoveries, and invaluable insights from local connoisseurs. Here are the highlights of what graced our plates and tantalized our taste buds:

St. Tropez: Where Glamour Meets Gastronomy

Le Café: A charming spot that perfectly captures the relaxed yet chic essence of St. Tropez. It’s ideal for a leisurely meal or simply to soak in the town’s atmosphere.
Marcellino: A standout for its fresh and vibrant dishes. The ceviche here is an absolute must-try – a burst of zesty flavors that perfectly complements the coastal setting.
Dior Café: More than just a meal, this is an experience. Indulge in exquisite pastries and coffees in a setting of unparalleled elegance, embodying St. Tropez’s luxury.
Homer Lobster: Bridger’s stamp of approval speaks volumes! Their lobster roll is a sublime treat, fresh and perfectly prepared, offering a taste of casual indulgence.
L’Olive & La Cucina: These two establishments came highly recommended for their authentic Mediterranean and Italian offerings, promising delightful dining experiences that we look forward to exploring on a return visit.

Nice Area: A Symphony of Flavors

Le Grand Café de France: So good, we found ourselves there twice without even realizing it! It excelled in both dinner and breakfast, offering a diverse menu that catered to all our cravings with consistently high quality.
Oakberry Acai: A definite 10/10 recommendation! You absolutely have to try their acai bowl, customized with all your favorite toppings. We discovered this gem for breakfast and it became an instant favorite for a refreshing and healthy start to the day.
Piccola Goletta: We were utterly charmed by the food here. The Bruschetta (pronounced “Broo-SKET-ta,” a local tip!) is simply divine. I savored the perfectly grilled sea bass, while Bridger thoroughly enjoyed his pizza, a testament to their varied and delicious menu.
Le Plongeoir, Nice: Known for its iconic setting, this restaurant offers not just incredible food but also a unique dining experience, perched dramatically over the water.
La Cave du Fromager: A true delight for cheese and wine lovers. This establishment specializes in exquisite food and wine pairings, providing a refined culinary journey.
Les Pecheurs in Nice at the Port: For fresh seafood and a vibrant atmosphere, this spot by the port is a local favorite.
Olive & Artichaut: A highly recommended eatery celebrating local ingredients and authentic Riviera flavors, promising a true taste of the region.

Exploring the Jewels of the Côte d’Azur: Must-Visit Locations

The French Riviera is a treasure trove of picturesque towns and breathtaking landscapes, each offering a unique glimpse into the region’s charm and history. Our exploration took us to some truly unforgettable spots:

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat: This was an absolute highlight for us. We took the scenic train ride to this elegant town, then embarked on a picturesque two-mile walk along a coastal pathway leading us to the exquisite Paloma Beach. After a delightful Mediterranean lunch at Paloma Beach, we crossed to the other side of the point, Plage de la Fosse, to relax and tan on the quieter sands. Remember to bring comfortable shoes, as there’s plenty of walking involved, but every step is worth the stunning views!
Villefranche-sur-Mer: A truly colorful and charming town located conveniently close to Nice. It’s an ideal stop either before or after visiting Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, perfect for grabbing a memorable lunch or dinner. We dined at Dry and absolutely loved it – do not miss their hummus!
Monaco: Hands down, one of my favorite stops on the entire trip. Even though most shops and stores were closed because it was a Sunday, we were completely captivated simply by walking through the entire city-state. The opulent architecture, pristine streets, and stunning harbor views left us in awe. We genuinely wished we could have stayed longer to fully immerse ourselves in its unique atmosphere and explore its renowned attractions.
Menton: Located right on the Italian/French border, just north of Nice, Menton is undeniably cute and charming. Its vibrant pastel-colored buildings, lush gardens, and famous lemon groves make it a must-see destination, offering a distinct flavor of the Riviera.
Eze: This enchanting medieval village perched dramatically atop a hill is a sight to behold. We dedicated a few hours to exploring its winding cobblestone streets and breathtaking panoramic views. However, getting there from the train station can be a bit challenging. Be prepared to either hike up the mountain, brave a potentially packed bus, or, as we humorously did, snag the one Uber available in town! Despite the transportation quirks, it was a truly great and cool experience, but perhaps not recommended if you’re very short on time.
Old Town Antibes: A historic gem with a charming walled old town, bustling market, and Picasso Museum, offering a delightful blend of history and culture.
Iles de Lerins Sainte Marguerite: These islands near Cannes offer a serene escape, perfect for a day trip to explore historic forts and enjoy beautiful natural surroundings.
Mirazur: A world-renowned Michelin-starred restaurant near Menton, for those seeking an unparalleled gourmet experience.
Nice: Beyond the Promenade des Anglais, explore hidden gems like Babel Babel and Lavomatique for unique local vibes, and relax at Castel Plage. Don’t miss Castle Hill for the most incredible panoramic views of the entire Baie des Anges and the city below.
Collioure & Carcassonne: While Collioure is a beautiful coastal town further west towards the Spanish border, and Carcassonne is a magnificent medieval fortified city inland, they represent stunning options for those extending their French adventures beyond the immediate Riviera.
Plage de Mala: A secluded and hidden beach cove, known for its pristine waters, fewer tourists, and a charming beach bar/cafe, offering a more tranquil beach experience.

Activities & Experiences: Making Memories on the French Riviera

St. Tropez: Leisure and Luxury

Explore the Town and Port: Spend a delightful afternoon strolling through the iconic town of St. Tropez, browsing the high-end boutiques and charming local shops. The port itself is a spectacle, adorned with luxurious yachts – perfect for people-watching and soaking in the glamorous atmosphere.
Indulge at Tata Harper Spa: Treat yourself to a rejuvenating facial or other pampering treatments at the Tata Harper Skincare spa located within the exquisite Lou Pinet hotel. It’s an oasis of relaxation, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration.
Savor Macarons at Ladurée: No trip to St. Tropez is complete without a stop at the legendary Maison Ladurée. Pick up some exquisite macarons, a perfect sweet treat to enjoy as you explore or as a delightful souvenir.
Embrace a Beach Day: St. Tropez is renowned for its beautiful beaches. Spend a leisurely day soaking up the sun, swimming in the Mediterranean, and enjoying the vibrant beach club scene at Pampelonne Beach or a more secluded cove.

Nice & Surrounding Areas: Adventure and Discovery

The Ultimate Day Trip: Eze, Monaco, and Menton: Dedicate one full day to an unforgettable triple-destination train journey. Begin by exploring the captivating medieval village of Eze, then proceed to the opulent city-state of Monaco. Shopping here is phenomenal, with luxury boutiques lining the streets of Monte Carlo, and stylish beach clubs offering a taste of the high life. Remember that Monaco is its own independent territory! Conclude your day in the charming border town of Menton. This super cute town is perfect for a leisurely stroll and a delicious meal. Menton has been famous for its lemons for centuries, so be sure to stock up on lemon-infused treasures like lemon olive oil and local honey – they make fantastic souvenirs!
Another Coastal Escape: Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat Beach Day: On another day of your trip, hop on the train and head to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat for a perfect beach day. As described earlier, the walk to Paloma Beach and beyond is incredibly rewarding, offering pristine waters and scenic beauty.
Beach Clubs in Nice: For a quintessential Riviera beach experience, explore some of Nice’s fantastic beach clubs. Anao Plage offers a vibrant atmosphere and comfortable lounging options, while Le Galet provides another excellent choice for enjoying the sun, sand, and sea with convenient amenities.
