From Athlete to Empowering Others: My Holistic Journey in Health and Fitness
The transformative power of sports profoundly shaped the person I am today. From a young age, engaging in competitive athletics instilled in me a bedrock of qualities and a driven mindset that continues to define my daily approach to life and work. My experiences on the soccer field and basketball court were more than just games; they were rigorous training grounds for developing unwavering passion, mastering effective communication, and understanding the intricate process of setting and achieving personal goals. This early foundation became the cornerstone of my professional trajectory in the dynamic world of health and fitness.
The Formative Years: Childhood Dreams and Athletic Discipline
As a child, my imagination was captivated by the idea of helping others achieve their wellness aspirations. I envisioned myself as a personal trainer, finding immense satisfaction in guiding clients towards their health and fitness objectives. My aspirations didn’t stop there; I also pictured myself as a skilled masseuse, a knowledgeable nutritionist, and a serene yoga instructor. It’s fair to say that I harbored the ambition of becoming a true ‘jack-of-all-trades’ in the wellness realm right from the start, eager to explore every facet of holistic well-being.
Discipline Forged on the Court: The Practice of Excellence
One of the most profound lessons I learned early on was the undeniable truth that “practice truly makes perfect.” My basketball training regimens were notoriously intense, pushing the boundaries of physical and mental endurance. Several days a week, we incorporated rigorous weightlifting sessions in the gym, often followed by grueling “two-a-day” practices. I still vividly recall the countless “16s” – a dreaded conditioning drill that left me scarred for life, yet undeniably stronger. While these experiences were demanding, they were the very crucible that forged our team’s success, leading us to win state championships several years in a row. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything. The sacrifices, including a largely non-existent social life because, for me, #ballislife, were integral to developing an unshakeable work ethic and a deep understanding of what it takes to achieve excellence.
Navigating Academia: A Serendipitous Path Through Nutrition and Exercise Science
My academic journey led me to Oregon State University, where I immersed myself in the challenging curriculum of Nutrition & Dietetics, alongside pursuing a minor in Sports Injury Care. The exercise science classes I took were particularly captivating, offering deep insights into the human body and its capabilities. Courses such as Biomechanics of Human Movement, Anatomy & Physiology, Psychology of Sport, and Exercise Physiology unlocked a new level of fascination for me, bridging my athletic experience with scientific understanding. Each subject expanded my comprehension of how the body functions, moves, and adapts, reinforcing my passion for human performance and wellness.
However, my path took an unexpected turn towards the end of my junior year when I discovered that the Sports Injury Care minor I had diligently worked towards was discontinued, meaning I wouldn’t receive credit for it with my degree. Initially, I was profoundly disappointed, feeling that those intensive classes had been a waste of precious time and effort. Yet, a fundamental belief I hold is that “everything happens for a reason,” a philosophy that has consistently proven true in my life. It simply took a little longer for me to grasp the wisdom in this particular situation. As fate would have it, during my dietetic internship after graduation, I had the incredible opportunity to work closely with the sports dietitian at OSU. This role allowed me to cater specifically to the nutritional needs of elite athletes, most notably the football players, during their demanding training camps. This hands-on experience was nothing short of incredible; it not only validated but intensified my passion for working with athletes and solidified my future career direction.
The Leap of Faith: Embracing the Personal Training Path
Just three months after successfully passing the national dietitian exam, I made a pivotal decision: to actively pursue my childhood dream of becoming a certified personal trainer. This wasn’t merely a career choice; it was a deeply personal step towards fulfilling a long-held ambition and broadening my capacity to positively impact others’ lives. Having achieved one significant milestone in dietetics, I felt an undeniable pull to expand my expertise and embrace the hands-on aspect of fitness coaching. It was a clear confirmation of my belief in continuous growth and diversified skill sets within the health and wellness industry.
Choosing Excellence: My NASM Certification Journey
The decision to pursue my personal training certification through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) was, in many ways, an easy one. My research prior to enrolling consistently highlighted NASM’s reputation for comprehensive, science-backed education. Furthermore, I observed that several of my most admired “fitness idols,” such as Alexia Clark and Kaisa Keranen, were also NASM-certified professionals. This endorsement from leaders in the field instilled a high degree of confidence in my choice, affirming that I was aligning myself with a recognized standard of excellence. I opted for the most cost-effective version of their online study certification program – a valuable tip for aspiring trainers is to always watch for sales, as NASM frequently offers discounts. This self-paced, entirely online format provided the flexibility I needed, allowing me to diligently study the material concurrently with establishing my nutrition-focused private practice. It was a challenging balancing act, but one that allowed me to build two complementary pillars of my career simultaneously.
While my genuine interest in the subject matter fueled my excitement, maintaining consistent study habits proved challenging after the initial two months. The lingering exhaustion from my intensive university studies had taken its toll, and burnout was a real hurdle. Nevertheless, my determination prevailed. I systematically worked through the entire study package, completing it within a four-month timeframe and successfully passing the NASM exam between November 2016 and March 2017 (with approximately a month’s break from studying in between). My extensive background in exercise science and human anatomy from college proved invaluable, providing a robust foundation that made the certification material more intuitive and the exam preparation feel much more manageable. This academic preparation significantly enhanced my confidence and readiness.
For anyone currently weighing their options among various personal training certifications, I wholeheartedly recommend looking into NASM. My personal experience with their program has been exceptionally positive, from the quality of the educational content to their responsive and helpful customer service. Should you have any questions or require guidance throughout the certification process, their team is readily available to assist, ensuring a smooth and supportive learning journey.
Beyond Certification: The Journey of Continuous Learning and Empowerment
Fast-forward to the present (August 2017), my commitment to continuous learning in the fitness industry remains as strong as ever. I have just embarked on studying for my next advanced certification through NASM: the Performance Enhancement Specialization (PES). This specialization is designed not only to equip me with the advanced knowledge necessary to significantly enhance the athletic performance of my clients but also to deepen my understanding of optimal training methodologies for my own fitness journey. The prospect of further expanding my expertise as a fitness professional fills me with immense excitement, and I eagerly anticipate the new opportunities and insights this advanced certification will bring.
The opportunity to discuss and share insights on health and fitness brings me profound joy and satisfaction. I am incredibly grateful for this platform, which allows me to connect with all of you, share my experiences, knowledge, and passion, and contribute to a community dedicated to wellness. My journey has been a testament to the power of dedication, continuous learning, and the unwavering pursuit of a purpose-driven career. I look forward to evolving further in this exciting field, always striving to empower individuals to achieve their fullest potential, both physically and mentally.
