3 Lunge Variations to Transform Your Lower-Body Workout

Ready to add a little variety to your workouts? I believe in keeping fitness simple, but mixing in a few creative variations can challenge balance, coordination, and stability while keeping things interesting. Below are three lunge variations to test your strength, mobility, and core control. They target the glutes, quads, and inner and outer thighs, and each brings its own unique challenge.

Reverse Lunge To High Kick

This version of the classic lunge increases the demand on your standing leg and forces your core to work overtime to maintain balance. Step back with your right foot into a controlled reverse lunge, then push off the floor and swing the back leg forward into a high kick, reaching toward the toes of the kicking foot with the opposite hand. The move builds strength in the glutes and quads, improves hip mobility, and elevates your heart rate for a bit of cardio benefit.

Cable Lateral Lunges

The cable machine adds consistent resistance throughout both the concentric and eccentric phases of a movement, which increases time under tension and helps build muscle control. Cable lateral lunges emphasize the inner and outer thighs, glutes, and core as you step laterally against the cable’s resistance. Focus on controlled movement, a stable torso, and driving through the heel of the working leg to return to standing.

Banded Walking Lunges

Banded walking lunges are deceptively challenging. Adding a resistance band increases tension throughout each step, making the hips, glutes, and legs work harder and improving stability and control. Use a band placed around the thighs or anchored for added resistance and step forward with purpose, maintaining an upright torso and steady breathing. These are great for building endurance and creating that satisfying muscle burn.
