Bridger’s Health Revelation: Simple Principles for a Healthier You
Hello everyone! I’m Bridger, Rachael’s husband, and I’m excited to share a part of my personal health journey with you. We’ve been living together for over three years now, and in that time, I’ve learned an incredible amount about what it truly means to live a healthy lifestyle. Like many, my journey didn’t start with a solid foundation. I grew up in an era where convenience often trumped nutrition, consuming an abundance of processed foods like white bread, sugary waffles, and countless bagels smothered in cream cheese.
This wasn’t due to a lack of care from my family, but rather a common societal challenge: navigating the often confusing and constantly evolving world of nutrition. My wonderful mom did try to introduce healthier options, but with a little persuasive pressure from my brother and me, our dad would often concede and bring home the ‘good stuff’—meaning, the less nutritious treats we craved (my poor mother!). My perspective on food and well-being began to shift significantly when I started dating Rachael in high school. At that point, her passion for nutrition was blossoming, leading her to pursue it as a career in college.
During my high school years, playing basketball and starting to lift weights, I first encountered the concept of protein and its role in muscle growth. It’s fascinating to reflect on how basic that knowledge seems today, understanding the fundamental differences between carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Yet, at that age, my comprehension of food and its profound effects on the body was virtually nonexistent. I’ve truly come a long way in my personal health evolution, and I recognize that for most people, having a registered dietitian readily available for advice isn’t as simple as a quick text or a walk up the stairs. That’s why I wanted to distill and share a handful of core principles I’ve absorbed over my years with Rachael – lessons I genuinely wish someone had taught me much earlier. My hope is that these insights can serve as a catalyst, helping you jumpstart or revitalize your own health journey and create as significant a positive impact in your life as they have in mine.
Hydration: The Foundational Pillar of Vitality
For a significant portion of my life, water was hardly my drink of choice. When you’re accustomed to sugary beverages, plain water can certainly seem bland and unappealing. However, it’s a fundamental truth that our bodies are composed of approximately 60% water, making it absolutely critical for every system to function correctly and at optimal levels. Our bodies possess an incredible ability to adapt to various conditions, but sufficient water intake is one of the few things it simply cannot adapt without.
The current general recommendation for men is around 3.7 liters (approximately 15.5 cups or 8 glasses of 8oz) per day, though this can vary significantly based on activity level, climate, and individual physiology. If you train or work out consistently, your body’s water requirements will naturally increase. A practical rule of thumb I’ve adopted is to refill my 24oz water bottle three to five times a day, ensuring I meet and often exceed these recommendations. Chances are, if you’re just embarking on your health journey, you’re likely not drinking enough water. Proper hydration is essential for digestion, nutrient absorption, temperature regulation, joint lubrication, and even cognitive function. Dehydration can manifest as fatigue, headaches, poor concentration, and reduced physical performance. To borrow a memorable line from Matthew McConaughey in The Wolf of Wall Street: “You gotta pump those numbers up. Those are rookie numbers in this racket.” Start small, keep a water bottle handy, and make it a conscious habit. Learn more about daily water intake here.
Conquering the Sugar Crave: Reduce/Eliminate Added Sugars
The emphasis here is squarely on “added” sugars. Natural sugars, like those found in whole fruits, are processed by our bodies very differently than the refined, concentrated sugars typically found in sodas, candies, and many processed foods. This principle remains as crucial for me today as it was when I first started my transformation. I possess an incredibly persistent sweet tooth, and overcoming my reliance on sugar has been one of my biggest triumphs, largely thanks to Rachael’s guidance and resources like her 7-Day Added Sugar Detox.
Seriously, this advice comes from someone who used to routinely drink five to six Coca-Colas a day, often supplementing that with two to three dollar-store boxed candies in the evenings. The undeniable truth is that excessive sugar consumption has detrimental effects on our health. It can spike insulin levels, significantly increasing the risk for type 2 diabetes, fuel systemic inflammation, contribute to weight gain, and lead to mental fogginess and energy crashes. One of the most remarkable personal benefits I noticed after cutting back on added sugars was a profound recalibration of my taste buds. They became far more sensitive to sweetness, making naturally sweet foods like fruit taste incredibly delicious and satisfying. Many other foods also gained a depth of flavor I hadn’t appreciated before.
We’ve all experienced that frustrating cycle: eat something sugary, and soon after, crave even more sugar. When you break free from this cycle, your body’s natural hunger and satiety signals begin to reset, and those intense cravings for artificial sweetness gradually diminish. Trust me, it took genuine commitment for me to complete even a 7-day period without added sugar, but the rewards are immeasurable. I now experience sustained energy throughout the day, without the dramatic peaks and crashes that characterized my previous sugar-fueled existence.
The Power of Healthy Fats: Swap Your Cooking Oils
As I mentioned earlier, my understanding of healthy fats was virtually nonexistent until much later in college, well into Rachael’s nutrition schooling. Back then, like many college students, my grocery shopping philosophy revolved around spending as little as possible and maximizing quantity for my buck. If this resonates with you, then you’re likely very familiar with inexpensive cooking oils like canola, vegetable, and soybean oils – those drastically cheaper options occupying the same grocery aisle as higher-quality alternatives.
What isn’t widely known, and what researchers are continually uncovering, is the critical importance of your omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid ratio for overall health, particularly concerning cognitive brain function. To simplify: omega-3 fatty acids are generally anti-inflammatory and highly beneficial, while omega-6 fatty acids are necessary in moderation but can become pro-inflammatory when consumed in excess. Unfortunately, the standard Western diet is overloaded with omega-6s, primarily from processed foods and industrial seed oils like canola, corn, and sunflower oil.
Fatty acids are the primary structural components supporting our brains. By consistently supplying our bodies with low-quality omega-6 acids found abundantly in cheaper, highly processed oils, we are doing a significant disservice to one of our most vital organs. Do you struggle with brain fog or lack of clarity? A powerful step towards clearer thinking is to remove these damaging, low-quality oils from your diet. Our goal is to improve the omega-3 : omega-6 ratio, meaning we want to consume more omega-3s and reduce excessive omega-6s. This can be achieved by incorporating better quality cooking oils such as avocado oil (excellent for high-heat cooking), extra virgin olive oil (perfect for dressings and lower-heat cooking), and coconut oil (great for certain flavors and medium-heat applications). Not only will these higher-quality oils enhance the taste of your food, but you’ll also likely notice a significant difference in how you feel, from improved energy to enhanced mental clarity. Unlocking Performance with Quality Sleep: Get Adequate Rest
I am a strong advocate for a solid 8-9 hours of sleep each night. Rachael can certainly attest to this; if anything, I might even be prone to oversleeping! The importance of adequate, high-quality sleep cannot be overstated, especially considering the various stresses we face in the modern world. Sleep is our immune system’s most crucial opportunity to recharge, repair, and recover from the demands of keeping us healthy throughout the day. Beyond immune support, quality sleep is consistently linked to a multitude of benefits, including improved memory and learning, enhanced mood regulation, superior exercise performance and recovery, and even support for healthy weight management. And let’s be honest – who doesn’t appreciate a refreshing nap?
One common misconception is that simply logging enough hours in bed equates to restorative sleep. However, the quality of that sleep is paramount. During a peaceful night’s rest, our bodies cycle through distinct stages of sleep, each with its unique benefits. This cycle typically flows from Awake → Light Sleep → Deep Sleep → REM Sleep, repeating several times until we awaken. The REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage is particularly vital for cognitive recovery, memory consolidation, emotional processing, and brain stimulation. It’s during REM that many of the restorative and learning processes occur, making it arguably the most important segment of the entire sleep cycle.
Factors like consistent sleep schedules, a dark and cool sleeping environment, and limiting screen time before bed are crucial for optimizing sleep quality. Certain natural compounds, such as melatonin, can influence our sleep architecture by potentially increasing the duration we spend in the REM portion, thereby leading to more effective sleep. While melatonin supplements are available, it’s worth noting that this hormone can also be found naturally in various foods, including bell peppers, tomatoes, walnuts, and some forms of red meat. Prioritizing quality sleep is not a luxury; it’s a non-negotiable component of a truly healthy and thriving lifestyle.
Navigating the Processed Food Maze: Reduce/Eliminate Highly Processed Foods
Our modern food system, while providing unparalleled convenience, is far from perfect when it comes to nutritional integrity. A processed food is essentially any food that has been altered from its natural state during preparation, often involving industrial techniques, added ingredients, and packaging designed to extend shelf life. While the initial goal of processing was to decrease food waste and offer greater accessibility, a significant drawback is that many of these foods lose most, if not all, of their inherent nutrient content along the way. They often become laden with hidden sugars, unhealthy fats, excessive sodium, and artificial additives.
By consciously shifting our focus towards fresh, minimally processed, and ideally unpackaged foods, we can sidestep the issue of nutrient depletion and ensure we’re fueling our bodies with truly nourishing ingredients. Making healthy swaps doesn’t have to be daunting. For instance, instead of opting for sugary, additive-filled peanut butter brands, try grinding your own peanuts or almonds at the store, or look for brands with just two ingredients: peanuts and sea salt. Similarly, rather than reaching for conventional coffee creamers filled with artificial flavors and sugars, Rachael recommends simple homemade alternatives like cashew milk, naturally sweetened with a touch of honey or maple syrup.
It’s important to note that not all processed foods are created equal; some minimal processing, like chopping vegetables or pasteurizing milk, can be beneficial. The key lies in understanding what you’re consuming. The most empowering tool you have as a consumer is the ingredient list. Make it a habit to read labels diligently. I personally prioritize foods with the fewest ingredients possible, choosing those where I can pronounce and readily understand every component. The ultimate goal is to gravitate towards more whole foods—ingredients that come directly from the earth, as close to their natural state as possible. This simple shift empowers you to make informed decisions and truly nourish your body from the inside out.
The Art of Incremental Change: Start Small
Rachael constantly emphasizes this point in her teachings, and it’s one of my absolute favorites: the power of small changes. It’s a concept that truly resonates because grand, sweeping overhauls of your entire lifestyle are rarely sustainable in the long run. The human brain is wired for comfort and routine, and trying to change too much, too fast, often leads to feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and eventually, a regression to old habits. Instead, embrace the philosophy of incremental progress.
Begin by swapping just one or two items in your diet or introducing a single new healthy habit. Once that change feels comfortable and integrated into your routine, then, and only then, consider adding another. This gradual approach ensures that the changes don’t feel overwhelming or unachievable. Over time, these small, consistent adjustments will organically transform into ingrained habits that are sustainable and long-lasting. Trying to achieve a complete lifestyle transformation overnight is a recipe for burnout; you might endure for a short period, but eventually, the sheer pressure will likely lead you back to your old ways.
Instead, focus on setting weekly, achievable goals that put your personal health at the top of your priority list. Take the principles outlined above and translate them into concrete, day-to-day actions that resonate with your life. For example, instead of a sugary soft drink, choose water. If plain water seems unappealing, try flavoring it with slices of lemon, cucumber, or a squeeze of fresh fruit to make it something you genuinely want to drink. Start scrutinizing the ingredient labels of items in your pantry. Notice that many contain canola oil or other highly processed oils? The next time you shop, make a conscious effort to seek out alternative brands that use healthier fats, like avocado oil, and make that swap. Thankfully, the market today offers a plethora of healthier alternatives to many of our favorite foods, making these substitutions less challenging than ever before.
Remember, a healthy lifestyle, much like the ancient city of Rome, wasn’t built in a day. It’s a continuous journey of small, deliberate steps, each contributing to a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant you. Be patient with yourself, celebrate every small victory, and trust in the cumulative power of consistent, positive choices.
