However, the true test of your vehicle’s capability (and perhaps your adventurous spirit) emerges when you venture beyond Hana, especially if you continue south towards the Seven Sacred Pools (Oheʻo Gulch) – which is often the starting point for those opting for the reverse route. This “backside” portion of the loop is notoriously less maintained, featuring unpaved dirt roads, substantial potholes, uneven gravel sections, and occasional water crossings. We personally witnessed numerous standard cars struggling immensely, some even getting stuck or sustaining noticeable damage. The drive from the Pools up towards Hana involves some of the narrowest, bumpiest stretches, occasional one-lane roads, and gravel sections. While it might sound daunting to tackle the “worst” part initially, completing it early means the remainder of your drive feels like a literal breeze, allowing you to truly relax, enjoy the breathtaking scenery, and stop at your leisure as you head back north.

4. Pack Abundant Food and Snacks – Dining Options Are Exceptionally Scarce!

   Do not, under any circumstances, underestimate the extreme scarcity of food options along the Road to Hana. This is not a route dotted with convenient stores, charming cafes, or even many formal sit-down restaurants. Planning to “grab food along the way” is a common mistake that can lead to significant hunger, dehydration, and frustration. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of packing a cooler well-stocked with sandwiches, fresh fruit, a variety of snacks, and plenty of water or other beverages. While there are a handful of delightful local fruit stands and legendary banana bread stands, they are few and far between, their operating hours can be inconsistent, and they might even sell out quickly.
