When I shared this Reel showing how I stocked our Airbnb fridge and asked for healthy fridge and grocery shopping hacks, I was surprised by how many brilliant tips you all shared. I decided to collect the best, most practical suggestions here so we can all refer back to them when we need inspiration. Some tips may seem obvious, but hopefully a few will feel new and useful. If I missed a favorite hack, please comment below!
Healthy Fridge & Grocery Hacks to Try
1. Store fresh herbs upright in a mason jar half-filled with water in the fridge, and trim stems as needed. They stay fresh much longer and don’t wilt. Change the water every few days. For cilantro and similar herbs, place a plastic bag loosely over the top to extend freshness even more.
2. Wash berries in a solution of distilled vinegar and water to help them last longer and reduce mold.
3. Keep greens fresher by covering plastic containers with a damp paper towel sheet before sealing.
4. Store cut carrots and celery submerged in water with a splash of vinegar to maintain crispness. (I haven’t tried this myself.)
5. Freeze bananas, zucchini and leafy greens that are nearing the end of their life to use later in smoothies and cooked recipes.
6. Once an avocado becomes soft, move it to the refrigerator to prolong its usable life.
7. Split a large bunch of bananas into two smaller bunches; bananas ripen more slowly when not all clumped together.
8. Use beeswax wraps and reusable silicone or fabric produce bags — I like Stasher-style bags — to keep produce fresh and reduce plastic waste.
9. Store produce on open shelves or door shelves rather than tucked away in drawers so items stay visible and are less likely to be forgotten. Clear containers can help keep things separated and organized. Keep condiments in the drawers instead.
10. Write expiration or purchase dates on containers and jars with a permanent marker so leftovers and broths don’t get forgotten in the back of the fridge.
11. One of the most useful tips I saw was using a shared grocery list in a reminders app, with categories or separate lists for each store you frequent. That way partners can check what’s needed and pick up items for each other when out running errands — it’s incredibly efficient.
12. Organize kids’ snacks in labeled bins and wash and pre-cut fruits and vegetables so assembling lunches or quick snacks is fast and easy.
13. Store lemons and limes in a jar of water to prevent them from drying out. Their porous skin keeps them fresher when submerged.
14. Don’t overstock the fridge. Too much produce can get lost in the clutter and spoil. Buying a smaller, well-planned selection often reduces waste.
15. Use grocery delivery or pickup services like Instacart or grocery-specific apps when you want to avoid impulse buys from walking the aisles and to stick to a plan.
16. Give each type of item a specific “home” in the fridge — dairy in one spot, condiments in another, meal-prep containers in a dedicated shelf. Clear zones reduce chaos and make grab-and-go easier.
17. Before shopping, take inventory and clean out your fridge. Knowing what you already have prevents duplicate purchases and helps you plan meals around existing ingredients.
