Greece to Amsterdam: A Honeymoon Odyssey

Embarking on a journey as significant as a honeymoon calls for meticulous planning and boundless excitement. After what felt like an eternity of dreaming and organizing, my husband Bridge and I finally set off on our dream Greek island hopping adventure, culminating in a charming stop in Amsterdam. This wasn’t just any trip; it was, without a doubt, the most incredible and extended getaway we’ve ever experienced together. Every moment was a cherished memory, each island a unique discovery, and the entire itinerary was lovingly crafted by yours truly – no travel agent, just a passion for research and genuine recommendations.

I poured over countless travel blogs, scoured social media for local tips, and reached out to fellow travelers for their must-see and must-do suggestions. This comprehensive guide is a culmination of all that effort, designed to equip you with everything you need to plan your own unforgettable Greece honeymoon itinerary. While I’ve integrated many of the fantastic recommendations you shared, please do drop a comment if you feel I’ve overlooked a hidden gem!

Looking back, I wouldn’t change a single detail of our honeymoon. Each island we explored offered a distinctly different flavor of Greek charm, collectively creating a tapestry of unparalleled beauty and adventure. Our final stop, the enchanting city of Amsterdam, held a special place in our hearts, having captivated us during a whirlwind 48-hour visit in 2018. Returning to its picturesque canals and vibrant streets felt like coming home.

I sincerely hope this detailed guide serves as an invaluable resource for your future Greece trip planning. The memories we forged will last a lifetime, and we eagerly await the day we can return to these magical shores.

Essential Tips for Your Dream Greek Island Honeymoon

Planning a multi-island adventure requires a few savvy insights. Here are some random yet crucial tips to enhance your trip:

Packing Smart for Island Hopping: Bridge and I each brought a full checked bag, a small carry-on suitcase, and a smaller personal bag. While I initially worried about the amount of luggage, it proved surprisingly manageable. Most hotels and private transfer services in Greece are incredibly accommodating, assisting with luggage transport to and from your accommodations. Consider packing versatile layers, comfortable walking shoes for exploring charming villages, and of course, plenty of swimwear for those stunning beaches.

Choosing Your Greek Islands: A frequently asked question is, “If you could only pick two islands from the four you visited, which would they be?” My answer always depends on your desired experience. If you’re torn between Paros and Milos, consider this:

  • Paros: Offers a more relaxed, authentic Cycladic vibe. It’s perfect for leisurely days of beach hopping with a rental car, enjoying exquisite dinners in charming villages like Naoussa, and exploring local shops at your own pace.
  • Milos: Is the ultimate island for adventure seekers. If your ideal vacation involves cliff jumping into crystal-clear waters, exploring hidden coves with a dune buggy, embarking on a private boat trip to the iconic Kleftiko, or hiking to ancient castles for breathtaking sunsets, Milos is your perfect match.

In my personal opinion, Mykonos and Santorini are indispensable. Despite their reputation as “touristy” islands, their iconic beauty and unique atmospheres are simply unparalleled, and we absolutely adored every moment. For future trips, we’re keen to explore a few new, smaller, and perhaps lesser-known islands to experience a different side of Greece.

The Best Time to Visit Greece: My strong recommendation is to plan your trip between late May and late September. This period guarantees fantastic weather and ensures that all businesses, restaurants, and attractions are fully operational for the tourist season. Traveling outside these months risks encountering colder nights, unpredictable winds, and more limited options for dining and activities. July and August represent the absolute peak of tourist season, with larger crowds and higher prices. For a more serene experience with pleasant weather and fewer visitors, June and September are truly golden months for a Greek island escape.

MYKONOS: The Glamorous Gem of the Cyclades

Mykonos Sunset Bar with panoramic views of the city.

180-degree Sunset Bar, Mykonos

Our Mykonos experience kicked off with seamless travel. From Seattle, we flew into Athens, then immediately caught a short, 30-minute connecting flight to Mykonos. While a 2.5-hour ferry is an option, if you’re prone to seasickness like me, a plane is always the preferred choice. Plus, Greek ferries are notoriously prone to delays, making air travel a more reliable and comfortable option for navigating between islands.

We allocated 4 nights and 5 days to Mykonos, which felt like the perfect duration. While Mykonos is famously known as the party island – a scene we didn’t fully immerse ourselves in – this timeframe allowed us to explore a significant portion of the island’s charm and relax at our stunning hotel without feeling rushed.

HOTEL: We chose to stay at Soho Roc House, an exclusive members-only hotel that offered a luxurious and tranquil escape. Its elegant design and serene atmosphere provided the perfect balance to the island’s vibrant energy.

TRANSPORTATION: I highly recommend renting a car for 1-2 days to truly discover Mykonos. We consulted with one of our drivers, who advised against scooters and ATVs due to the island’s narrow, winding roads, which can be quite dangerous. We conveniently arranged our car rental directly through our hotel. It appeared that renting through a hotel might bypass the need for an international driver’s license, whereas independent rentals (e.g., if staying at an Airbnb) generally require one. Always verify current requirements.

PAROS: Authentic Charm & Laid-Back Vibes

Picturesque town of Naoussa in Paros, Greece.

The picturesque fishing village of Naoussa, Paros

Our journey to Paros was incredibly smooth, with the quickest and easiest ferry ride of our entire trip – a mere 45 minutes from Mykonos. This efficiency made the transition between islands a breeze.

We stayed for 3 nights and 4 days in Paros. Arriving midday and departing late on our fourth day gave us ample time to explore without feeling rushed. I highly recommend a minimum stay of 3 nights to truly appreciate the island’s relaxed pace and diverse offerings.

HOTEL: We chose to stay at Parilio, A Member of Design Hotels, and it was simply stunning. I had discovered it on Instagram years ago and knew we had to experience it. The hotel exceeded all expectations, offering exquisite design, unparalleled comfort, and impeccable service. Its location, just a 5-minute drive from Naoussa, and proximity to several beautiful beaches, made it an ideal base. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone visiting Paros.

TRANSPORTATION: Renting a car from the moment we arrived until our departure was the best decision we made for Paros. The island is best explored by car, allowing you the freedom to discover its hidden beaches, charming inland villages, and scenic coastal routes. We conveniently arranged our car rental through our hotel.

Paros: Gastronomy & Evening Ambiance

  • *Stilvi: Offers incredible food and drinks for dinner. Like many Greek restaurants, it starts filling up later in the evening, so an early arrival (around 7 PM) will likely secure you an open table.
  • *Sigi Ikthios: Located in Naoussa, this restaurant delivered the most amazing seafood and exceptional service. A true culinary highlight.
  • *Barbarossa: Another must-go dinner spot in Naoussa, right next to Sigi. Their crispy zucchini is legendary and an absolute must-try!

  • *Rent a car: As mentioned, this is essential for fully exploring the island, allowing you to discover remote beaches and charming villages at your leisure.
  • *Take your car to Antiparos on the ferry for the afternoon: This was a definite highlight! Board the ferry at the Port of Pounta – it’s incredibly affordable, costing about 8 euros for two people and a car. Drive through the picturesque town, browse the boutique shops, and then head to Kedros Beach for a few hours. You pay a small minimum for a lounge chair, but it’s very reasonable and the beach is situated in a perfect, sheltered cove for swimming.

MILOS: The Island of Colors and Adventure

Sarakiniko Beach in Milos, with its unique white volcanic rock formations.

Sarakiniko Beach, Milos – A lunar landscape by the sea

Our ferry journey to Milos was a testament to the unpredictable nature of Greek island hopping. The 1 hour and 45-minute ride on a smaller boat made us quite sensitive to the waves. We discovered that typically there’s only one ferry making this route daily, often later in the evening (around 6 PM), and delays are common. This meant we arrived in Milos at 10 PM on our first night.

Given the delayed arrival, our 3 nights and 4 days in Milos effectively gave us only two full days of exploration. While we made the most of every moment, I honestly wish we had planned for an extra night to fully immerse ourselves in this incredible island’s offerings. If adventure is what you seek, an additional day or two is highly recommended for Milos island adventures.

HOTEL/AIRBNB: After months of debating between hotels, we decided to try an Airbnb for this leg of the trip. We found the absolute perfect place: Terra Mare Suites, the Holiday Home, booked via Booking.com. It was flawless! Literally steps from the water, offering a serene waterfront experience. Its central location was ideal, only about 12 minutes to Pollonia, 12 minutes to Sarakiniko Beach, and 10-15 minutes to the main port. We’d stay here again in a heartbeat. For those considering other options, White Coast Suites also looked incredibly appealing and is located nearby.

TRANSPORTATION: Without a doubt, rent a dune buggy! It was an absolute blast for Bridge and me, adding an exhilarating layer of adventure to our explorations. While we only spotted a few other dune buggies on the island, it’s truly the most fun way to get around. We used Apollonas Sunshine (email: [email protected]). Remember, if you’re staying in a rental or Airbnb, you’ll need an international driver’s license. Hotels typically assist with these requirements if you book through them.

Milos: A Taste of the Cyclades

  • Pollonia: This charming village offers a fantastic array of great restaurants along its waterfront.
  • *Deck: A delicious breakfast spot. Their “yoga frutas” – the best Greek yogurt I’ve ever tasted, topped with fresh fruit and honey – is an absolute must-try!
  • Medusa: We received countless recommendations for this waterfront restaurant in Firopotamos. We were so disappointed it was closed during our visit, but it comes highly praised.
  • Enalion in Pollonia: Known for its fresh seafood and delightful setting.
  • *De Milos in Pollonia: Offered truly excellent food and a wonderful dining experience.

  • Gialos: A charming seaside taverna in Pollonia.

Milos: Unforgettable Experiences & Unique Beaches

ACTIVITIES:

  • Drive to Klima: Explore this incredibly picturesque fishing village built right on the water, famous for its colorful “sirmata” (boat houses).
  • *Spend a couple of hours at Sarakiniko Beach: This otherworldly beach, often described as a moonscape, is perfect for photography, exploring unique rock formations, and cliff jumping.
  • *Hike to the top of the castle for sunset: An absolutely incredible experience with panoramic views. The ascent involves many stairs, so I recommend arriving a little early to enjoy the initial glow of the sunset. Then, start your descent before the main crowd to grab a table at Archontoula or Avli for dinner.
  • *Rent a small boat through Blue Mile to Kleftiko: This was a major highlight! Bridge was our skipper, and we sailed to the iconic Kleftiko caves, spending two hours swimming and exploring. Pack lunch, snacks, and definitely snorkels (my one regret not bringing them!). The underwater caves are spectacular.
  • Go to Kimolos island for the day: A nearby, tranquil island offering a different pace.
  • Kostantakis Winery: Enjoy a wine tasting experience at a local Milos winery.
  • Explore the caves of Papafragas: A stunning natural wonder with crystal-clear waters.
  • Visit the ancient theater: Discover the historical side of Milos.

BEACHES:

  • *Sarakiniko: The ultimate spot on Milos for cliff jumping and capturing stunning photos. The white volcanic rocks create a surreal, moon-like landscape. The water, like everywhere in Greece, is incredibly clear and warm. A word of caution: I was stung by a small, clear jellyfish here. While I didn’t hear of others encountering them, it’s always wise to be aware, especially towards late August/September when they might be more prevalent.
  • Tsigrado: An incredible beach located in the south, but reaching it involves climbing down a rope ladder – an adventure in itself! We wished we had an extra day to experience it.
  • Firiplaka: A beautiful, long sandy beach with colorful cliffs.
  • *Firopotamos: We attempted to visit here for photos just before dinner, but the sun had already set in this small, charming cove. I recommend going earlier in the day or before 4 PM to capture its full beauty.
  • Papafragas Caves: Not just for exploring from above, but also a unique spot for swimming.
  • *Paparodi Shore: Close to our Airbnb, featuring cool caves perfect for jumping and swimming underneath.

SANTORINI: Iconic Views & Romantic Sunsets

Oia town in Santorini, with its classic white buildings and blue domes overlooking the caldera.

The enchanting town of Oia, Santorini

If there’s one thing I could change about our entire trip, it would be to fly from Milos to Santorini instead of taking the ferry. Our ferry experience was a nightmare: a rainy and cloudy morning meant rough swells, transforming what should have been a 1 hour 40 minute journey into a grueling 3.5-hour ordeal. Lesson learned: always consider flying for this leg, especially if prone to seasickness.

Our 4 nights and 5 days in Santorini felt like the perfect amount of time. This island appears significantly larger than the others we visited, requiring at least four nights to fully explore its iconic towns, unique beaches, and breathtaking caldera views. This duration allowed us to truly soak in the magic of Santorini, the jewel of the Aegean.

HOTEL: We stayed at Santo Maris Oia Luxury Suites & Spa, a recommendation from my sister that we absolutely adored. It’s perfectly situated just outside the bustling, tourist-heavy center of Oia, nestled on the other side of the hill facing the sunset. This location provided a more spacious and tranquil environment compared to many other hotels closer to the main caldera pathway in Oia, yet still offered easy access with a pleasant 7-10 minute walk into town. It’s also conveniently closer to Ammoudi Bay, an area we fell completely in love with. The hotel itself boasted an excellent gym, a magnificent pool, a stylish bar, a gourmet restaurant, and a rejuvenating spa, all complemented by truly amazing views. If you go, request room 302!

TRANSPORTATION: While we happily spent 90% of our time exploring Oia on foot, we did receive many recommendations to venture to other parts of the island, including Thira/Fira. I highly suggest renting an ATV for two days during your stay in Santorini. This will give you the freedom to easily visit the unique Black, Red, and White beaches, as well as explore the vibrant capital, Fira. We conveniently booked our ATVs through our hotel.

Santorini: Exquisite Dining & Sunset Views

  • Ammoudi Bay: This incredibly cool fishing village, nestled directly beneath Oia, boasts a handful of fantastic waterfront restaurants. There’s a single steep road for driving and a winding pedestrian path with switchbacks leading up the hill (donkeys also use this path, so be cautious!). We trekked it four times – it’s a workout but entirely worth it. Make sure to visit for lunch or dinner a few times. Dimitri’s offered one of the best meals we had on Santorini. We tried Ammoudi Taverna one night, but found it three times more expensive with only average food and service.
  • Sunset Ammoudi: Another excellent dining option in the picturesque Ammoudi Bay.
  • *Dimitri’s in Ammoudi Bay: Featured an outstanding menu with literally everything delicious. Their tomato fritters, tzatziki, pita, grilled seabass, and hummus are absolute must-tries.
  • *Pitogyro: In our opinion, this place serves the BEST gyros in all of Greece! I still dream about them. They open at noon and are almost always busy. They offer takeaway, which we took advantage of on our last night, enjoying two chicken gyros and a Greek salad on our Santo Maris balcony while watching the legendary Santorini sunset 🌅.
  • *Fanari Restaurant: We dined here twice because the sunset views were insane, and the food was equally amazing.
  • *Apsithia Restaurant: Perfect for a refreshing Greek salad and fava spread while you’re shopping in Oia.
  • The Good Heart: Located a bit further out, but renowned for its authentic Greek cuisine and worth the journey.
  • *Solo Gelato: Create your own frozen yogurt masterpiece. A mandatory stop after sunset!
  • Oia Vineyart: A beautiful spot for wine tasting and light bites.
  • The Athenian House: Offers fine dining with stunning caldera views.
  • Ambrosia: A romantic restaurant famous for its gourmet Greek dishes and enchanting ambiance.
  • Flogs Restaurant: Known for its exceptional food and breathtaking views of the caldera.
  • La Maison Restaurant: A sophisticated option for modern Greek cuisine.
  • Mellitini: Offers delicious Greek tapas in a lively setting.
  • Nocturna: An underrated spot for sunset views, and their baklava is supposedly incredible.
  • Passagio: A great place for fresh smoothies and light meals.
  • Pyrgos Restaurant: Set in a traditional village, offering authentic Greek flavors and panoramic island views.
  • Rastoni: Ask for a table on the top floor for the best views.
  • Skiza Café: Known for good pizza and a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Pelekonos Restaurant: Offers traditional Greek dishes with a view.
  • Yogi Gyros: Another solid option for delicious gyros.
  • Lucky Gyros in Fira: A popular choice in the capital for a quick and tasty gyro.
  • Catch: A seafood restaurant in Oia with a stylish ambiance.
  • Fino: While it lacks a view, it’s highly praised for its incredible food and cocktails.
  • Metaxi Mas: Many recommendations for this traditional taverna; apparently, they have the best cheesecake.
  • PK Cocktail Bar in Fira: A fantastic spot for expertly crafted cocktails with caldera views.
  • Volcan on the Rocks: Offers a unique cinematic experience, playing movies like Mamma Mia and My Big Fat Greek Wedding every night alongside dinner.
  • Roka: Excellent for both lunch and dinner, known for its traditional Greek dishes.
  • Pacman: A lively bar perfect for evening drinks.
  • Salt and Pepper in Fira: A good choice for classic Greek comfort food.
  • Theros Wave Bar: Located on the south side of the island, perfect for beachside drinks and snacks.

Santorini: Thrilling Activities & Distinctive Beaches

ACTIVITIES:

  • *Rent ATVs for 1-2 days and cruise the island: Head to the unique Black Sand Beach/Kamari Beach (approximately 45 minutes each way from Oia). Many beachfront restaurants offer complimentary use of their beach chairs if you dine with them. We did this at The Acropolis and it was a fantastic deal!
  • Archaeological Museum & Museum of Prehistoric Thera: Immerse yourself in Santorini’s rich history and ancient past.
  • Sunset Cruise: While I couldn’t partake due to seasickness, this was one of the most highly recommended activities. Sailboats and catamarans depart nightly from Ammoudi Bay to witness the famous Santorini sunset from the water. Though some argue the view from Oia is superior, many travelers rave about this experience.
  • Enjoy the view from Profit Ilias: The highest point in Santorini, offering unparalleled panoramic views of the entire island.
  • *Watch sunset in Oia: Often hailed as the best sunset in the world, this is a quintessential Santorini experience. Find a spot early, perhaps with a drink, and prepare to be mesmerized.
  • Hike from Fira to Oia: Countless recommendations for this scenic hike, which takes 3-6 hours depending on your pace and starting point. Bring plenty of water and enjoy the stunning caldera views along the way. We simply didn’t have enough time to fit this in.
  • Suites of the Gods: You can pay to use their pool for the day and they’ll even bring you a fruit platter. Reputed to have an amazing view.
  • Boat Tour of the Caldera: Explore the volcanic islands within the caldera and even jump into the natural hot springs.

BEACHES:

  • *Black Sand Beach (Kamari/Perissa): These unique beaches offer complimentary access to beach chairs from most restaurants along the shore if you dine at their establishment. We enjoyed our time at The Acropolis, spending several hours relaxing before heading back to Oia on our ATVs.
  • Red Sand Beach: A striking beach named for its unique volcanic red sand and cliffs. It’s a short walk down from the cliff, and since there are no nearby restaurants, remember to bring snacks and water.
  • White Sand Beach: Accessible primarily by boat, this beach boasts white cliffs and pebbles, offering a secluded and serene experience.
  • *Ammoudi Cliff Jumping Spot: In my opinion, this is Santorini’s best-hidden gem! It was one of our favorite activities. Head down to Ammoudi Bay, walk past all the restaurants (Dimitri’s will be the last one on your left), and continue along the small path around the point. You’ll reach an incredible spot for swimming and jumping off a ~20-25ft cliff/rock. I recommend going earlier, around 11 AM, bringing towels and snacks, and spending a few hours before it gets crowded. Afterward, you can enjoy lunch at Dimitri’s Taverna on your way back.

AMSTERDAM: Canals, Culture & Cozy Cafes

Picturesque canal in Amsterdam with historic buildings and bicycles.

Our final destination was the charming city of Amsterdam. We flew directly from Santorini, a comfortable 3.5-hour flight. One of the primary reasons we chose Amsterdam as our last stop was the sheer convenience of a direct and easy flight from AMS to Seattle, making our journey home much smoother after our Greek adventure.

HOTEL: We continued our Soho House experience, staying at the sophisticated Soho House Amsterdam. Its central location and vibrant atmosphere provided a perfect final chapter to our honeymoon, blending luxury with the city’s unique energy.

  • Buy tickets for the Van Gogh Museum: (During our trip, due to COVID restrictions, Americans couldn’t get the necessary QR code for most museums). We visited this iconic museum on our first trip to Amsterdam and highly recommend it for art enthusiasts.
  • *Rent bikes and ride through Vondelpark: Embrace the local culture by renting bicycles and exploring Amsterdam’s largest and most famous park. It’s a wonderful way to experience the city like a local.
