Workout Sneaker Guide: Choosing the Right Shoe for Every Gym Session

Sneakers are essential for any workout routine, and I often get asked which pairs I reach for most. I tend to keep a few trusted, go-to styles that I wear repeatedly, switching depending on the workout for optimal comfort and performance. Below I’ve outlined my favorite sneakers for running and walking, cross-training, lifting, and lower-body sessions.

Nike Air Max 270 – This is likely my most-worn pair. They work well for cross-training and have a sleek look that pairs with many outfits. I own them in white because they match everything, though they’re available in many colors, including black. Note: Nike tends to run narrow, so they can take a little breaking in if you have wider feet.

On Cloud – Super comfortable and versatile, these are great for a variety of workouts. They’re popular and often sell out, so grab them when you find your size in stock.

Nike Free Metcon 4 – A favorite among the Good Sweat community (myself included). These Metcons shine for cross-training and come in many attractive colorways. I rely on them for high-intensity sessions and functional training.

APL Ascend – I prefer these for lower-body days because of their flat sole, which helps with stability during squats and lifts. I own the all-white pair and appreciate how they feel under heavy loads.

Adidas UltraBoost – My choice for running and long walks. UltraBoosts are extremely comfortable thanks to their responsive cushioning, though they provide a different type of support than some of my other training shoes.

Nike Waffle One – A newer addition to my rotation from a recent shoot. I love how they look, especially styled with scrunch socks. They’re a stylish option for casual wear and light activity.

Converse Chuck Taylor All Star – A classic flat shoe that’s excellent for lower-body lifting. I also wear them casually with jeans. I tend to reserve the platform Converse for non-workout outfits and prefer the standard Chuck Taylors when training.
