Becoming a first-time mom comes with a flood of information — from keeping you and baby healthy to managing nausea, fatigue, and preparing gear. It can feel overwhelming. My newborn grew into a seven-month-old in the blink of an eye, and while I loved pregnancy overall, I leaned on a handful of reliable items that made the experience more comfortable. Everyone’s needs differ, but here are my 20 most-used pregnancy essentials that I’d use again.
There are plenty of items you’ll need after birth (I’ve shared my most-used baby items and postpartum essentials elsewhere), but this list focuses on caring for yourself during pregnancy, preparing for birth, and managing common symptoms so you feel supported every step of the way.

My Most-Used Pregnancy Items
Below are my top 20 items, organized into five helpful categories.
For Better, More Comfortable Sleep
Sleep changes a lot during pregnancy. As your bump grows you may wake more often, and aches can make rest difficult. I found a few items that improved sleep quality and helped me feel rested.
Pregnancy Pillow
My pregnancy pillow was indispensable. It supported my lower back and hips, helped reduce nighttime tossing, and made it possible to stay comfortable through the night. I honestly miss it now.

Cooling Pajamas
Pregnancy can increase body temperature and night sweats. I lived in breathable, cooling pajamas that were soft, comfortable, and helped me sleep without overheating.

Magnesium Spray
Third-trimester soreness and joint achiness are common as your body changes. A magnesium spray applied before bed helped soothe aches and improve comfort so I could sleep more deeply.

Hatch Alarm Clock
White noise and gentle light transitions improved my sleep routine. A multifunction alarm with wind-down settings and gradual light helped me wake more gently and supported better sleep cycles.

For Staying Hydrated
Hydration matters more than ever during pregnancy: blood volume increases, and proper fluid intake supports circulation, skin elasticity, muscle recovery, and can ease nausea and headaches. A couple of simple tools made staying hydrated easier for me.
Water Bottle
Invest in a large, easy-to-carry water bottle with a straw. A 40 oz bottle was my go-to for keeping water nearby all day — it’s handy during pregnancy and nursing.

Electrolytes
I used electrolyte mixes regularly to boost hydration and add variety beyond plain water. They were especially helpful on hot days or after activity and helped reduce headaches and fatigue.

For Ideal Supplementation And Nutrition
Nutrition during pregnancy is crucial. Prioritize protein, healthy fats, and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, and use a prenatal vitamin to fill gaps. The current recommendation is to start prenatals several months before conceiving when possible to build nutrient stores. I’ve also shared a detailed post about the supplements I used as a dietitian.
Prenatal Vitamin
A high-quality prenatal vitamin was the foundation of my supplement routine. I chose a formula that included nutrients often lacking in other prenatals, such as choline, magnesium, and calcium, and that is third-party tested. A trusted prenatal can make a real difference in how you feel throughout pregnancy.

Protein Supplement
Hunger increases during pregnancy and getting enough protein helped me stay full and energized. I used a pregnancy-friendly protein powder daily in smoothies to support appetite control and nutrition.

For Belly Care + Skin Care
As your body expands, daily skin care matters. I used belly oils and hydrating lotions to support skin elasticity and updated facial skincare to pregnancy-safe products. Consistent moisturizing felt like a small but meaningful act of self-care.
Belly Oil and Lotion
I applied a rich belly balm daily to keep skin hydrated and comfortable. I also used a deeply nourishing body cream for extra moisture on dry days and a gradual tanning lotion when I wanted a confidence boost.

Clean & Pregnancy Safe Skin Care
I focused on a shortlist of clean, pregnancy-safe facial and body products that I used daily — effective, gentle, and free of ingredients to avoid during pregnancy.
For Fitness & Recovery
Staying active helped me feel strong, supported my mental health, and preserved mobility. I adjusted workouts as pregnancy progressed, prioritized pelvic floor and core care, and kept a consistent routine that felt good.
GOOD // SWEAT Pregnancy Guide
I designed a 26-week pregnancy workout program focused on safe, effective training, pelvic floor health, and appropriate modifications. It helped me stay consistent and confident throughout pregnancy.

Yoga Ball
A stability ball was useful for pelvic floor exercises, added support during workouts, and even as a comfortable seat for everyday tasks. It’s a simple, versatile tool for pregnancy and postpartum recovery.

I also linked other fitness essentials in my storefront for easy access to my favorite tools and gear.
Compression & Recovery Boots
Third-trimester swelling and leg aches are common. Compression and recovery boots were my top recovery tool for reducing swelling and speeding recovery after long days.

Stretchy Activewear
I sized up in activewear early on to accommodate my growing belly and chest. The stretchiest pieces became staples because they were comfortable, functional, and easy to wear both during pregnancy and postpartum.

For Staying Comfy As Your Baby (And Belly) Grows
Dressing changes quickly during pregnancy. Finding comfortable, versatile pieces that you can wear through multiple stages made daily life easier and helped me feel put together.
Jeans & Pants
I recommend choosing roomy denim or sizing up into low-rise styles that sit under the belly for comfort and wearability through pregnancy and postpartum. Stretchy joggers and flare leggings were lifesavers on days I needed extra comfort.

Dresses
Stretchy tank dresses and wrap styles were my go-to for warm weather. They’re comfortable, flattering, and easy to wear as your shape changes.

Bras
Supportive, comfortable bras were essential. I used a supportive nursing-style bra during pregnancy for extra coverage and comfort, and occasionally opted for lightweight nipple covers under stretchy tops when I wanted a smoother silhouette.

Cozy Robe
A soft robe was a comforting treat during pregnancy, great for early mornings, nights when nausea strikes, for hospital stays, and for postpartum comfort. It’s a small luxury that felt very helpful.

For Being Informed Without Getting Overwhelmed
You’ll get countless book and podcast recommendations while pregnant. I kept my reading list short and practical. Choose a few trusted resources that address the topics most important to you and trust your instincts — you don’t need to read everything.
Books
I found a couple of books especially helpful for practical guidance on infant care and nutrition during pregnancy. Pick resources that align with your values and your birth and parenting plans.

Postpartum
If you’re preparing for postpartum, I’ve compiled delivery and postpartum product recommendations, and a baby essentials list to help you feel ready for the hospital and the weeks that follow. I also share posts about mom life, breastfeeding tips, sleep strategies, and practical product picks to make the transition smoother.
