One of my favorite childhood memories is growing up on a small farm surrounded by fruit trees. When apple season arrived, my sister and I picked piles of apples and tried endless recipes. This homemade cinnamon applesauce is a longtime favorite. The warm aroma of apples with cinnamon and cloves, plus a touch of bright lemon, makes it perfect for breakfast, a snack, or even a simple dessert.
Applesauce often feels like a kid-friendly food, and it is—but adults should rediscover how comforting and satisfying it can be each fall. Every time I make this, the house fills with a cozy scent, and whether we eat it fresh for breakfast or as a snack the next day, it tastes like comfort. It’s full of nostalgic fall vibes.
BASIC IS GOOD
Simple, whole foods often taste and feel better than processed options. This applesauce is a great example: few ingredients, lots of flavor, and no added sugar. I love it so much I included it in my first cookbook. The apples and cinnamon provide plenty of natural sweetness, and the recipe uses just four main ingredients.

WHY DO YOU PUT LEMON JUICE IN APPLESAUCE?
Lemon juice brightens the flavor and balances the apples’ sweetness. It also helps prevent browning and acts as a mild natural preservative, keeping your applesauce fresher for longer.
INGREDIENTS YOU’LL NEED:
- 8–10 small to medium apples
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp cloves (optional)
Some ingredients can be adjusted to taste—cloves are optional if you prefer a milder spice. This combination is simple and reliably delicious.
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE CINNAMON APPLESAUCE
Peel and core the apples, then dice into cubes. I typically leave the skin on about half of the apples for extra fiber and texture. In a large pot, combine the diced apples with lemon juice, water, cinnamon, and cloves. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to low and simmer until the apples are soft, about 20–40 minutes depending on your preferred texture.
Once soft, mash the apples with a potato masher for a chunky applesauce or use an immersion blender for a smooth consistency. Serve warm with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon if desired. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
RECIPE SUBSTITUTIONS & QUESTIONS
Gala apples work well, but any apple variety will do. Mixing sweeter apples with a tart variety can add depth. Leaving some skins on boosts fiber and nutrients, and you can omit the cloves if you prefer a simpler spice profile.
IS APPLESAUCE WITH CINNAMON GOOD FOR YOU?
Homemade cinnamon applesauce can be a healthy snack. Apples are a good source of fiber—especially with the skin on—and contain antioxidants that support overall health. They’re also mostly water, making them hydrating. Cinnamon contributes additional antioxidants and a warm flavor without added sugar. Making applesauce at home avoids preservatives and excess sweeteners commonly found in packaged versions.
When I make a large batch, I sometimes gift jars to friends and family. It’s an easy, thoughtful homemade present.
This is one of my favorite and simplest fall recipes. Try it while apples are in season and enjoy!
