Is Too Much Salt Harmful? What You Need to Know About Electrolyte Drinks

I’m 38+ weeks pregnant, and staying well-hydrated is a top priority for me. I drink water throughout the day and often add an electrolyte supplement in the afternoon. There are many brands available, so check the sugar content before buying. My current preferences are LMNT and nuun.

Electrolytes 101

Electrolytes play a key role in maintaining overall health. They help the body generate energy, reduce fatigue, support hormone and immune function, and enable proper muscle contraction. Most importantly for daily wellness, electrolytes are essential for maintaining proper hydration and fluid balance.

Common electrolytes include:

  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Chloride
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Phosphate
  • Bicarbonate

Too Much Sodium?

Electrolyte mixes are formulated to replace minerals lost through sweat, urine, or illness. Sodium—one component of salt—is often highlighted because it is a major electrolyte, and some people are cautious about sodium intake. In context, electrolyte products are typically balanced blends designed to restore multiple minerals, not just sodium alone.

It’s wise to monitor overall sodium consumption, especially if you frequently eat out or consume processed foods. That said, when used appropriately, electrolyte supplements can support hydration and performance by restoring the right combination of minerals. Choose a product with a composition and sodium level that fit your health needs and lifestyle.

I personally recommend electrolytes as part of a hydration routine, but I also encourage finding the right dose for your body and consulting a healthcare professional if you have specific medical concerns. I use LMNT regularly in hot weather and during intense training, and I continue to use it while pregnant.
