Best Breads & Spreads for the Perfect Italian Sub Panini

Choosing the right bread and spreads makes all the difference. A sturdy loaf—baguette, ciabatta, or sourdough—holds up to pressing, crisps nicely, and keeps the layers intact. For spreads, a simple but bold oil-and-vinegar dressing elevates every ingredient. In this recipe, a quick mix of olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, and salt brightens the sandwich, and chopped Calabrian chilies add a smoky, spicy depth that makes the panini memorable.

High-Protein, Flavor-Packed Lunch Panini

This panini uses a mix of protein-rich, high-quality ingredients for a satisfying meal. Layered sliced turkey, Italian salami, and soppressata offer a balance of lean meat and classic cured flavors—savory, slightly peppery, and deeply satisfying.

Spicy pepper jack goat cheese and Calabrian chilies add heat and tang, while Roma tomatoes, pepperoncini, crisp romaine, and thinly sliced red onion provide freshness and crunch. A drizzle of the oil-and-vinegar dressing ties all the flavors together with a bright finish.

Serve the panini with a side salad, fruit, or chips for a complete, easy meal. It’s perfect whether you need a quick lunch or a simple dinner option.

What is the difference between a panini and a sandwich?

A panini is a grilled, pressed sandwich: the heat and pressure create a crisp exterior and a warm, melty interior, unlike a typical cold sandwich.

What bread is best for paninis?

Ciabatta, sourdough, or baguette are ideal because they stand up to pressing and grill to a crisp crust.

Can I make this without a panini press?

Yes. Use a skillet and press the sandwich with another heavy pan or a foil-wrapped brick to achieve similar results.

Are deli meats healthy?

Deli meats can be part of a balanced diet when chosen carefully. Freshly sliced deli meat typically contains fewer additives. Opting for organic or minimally processed brands can reduce preservatives and unnecessary ingredients.
