Trader Joe’s Guide to Smart Grocery Shopping

This shopping list has been a long time coming. From my first days creating this account as a senior studying nutrition, I’ve been a big fan of Trader Joe’s. While in college I shopped there one to two times a week between classes and studying, and even on a tight budget I rarely felt a dent in my finances. Trader Joe’s offers a wide range of affordable pantry staples, fresh and organic produce, and many trending items to help you stock a healthy kitchen.

The staff at Trader Joe’s are consistently friendly and helpful, often happy to answer questions. Many stores offer coffee and samples, making shopping both pleasant and convenient. I enjoy spending time exploring grocery aisles, and after years of trying favorites and new finds, I created this shopping guide so you can save it to your phone or print it out. Use it as an easy reference to shop smarter and healthier.

Quick tips before you head to Trader Joe’s:

  • Trader Joe’s has a generous return policy. If you’re not satisfied with an item, bring it back to the store for a refund or exchange—even without a receipt.
  • Read ingredient labels. Although Trader Joe’s carries many wholesome options, some products can include less-desirable ingredients like certain vegetable oils, added sugars, or additives. For example, some hummus varieties and other convenience items may contain canola oil or other oils you might want to avoid. Check dressings, sauces, nut butters, and prepared foods for added sugars and unnecessary additives.
  • If you buy dairy, choose organic when possible. USDA organic dairy means farmers do not use antibiotics or growth hormones, and the animals are fed non-GMO feed without synthetic pesticides or fillers.
