Lake days look a little different now that we’re parents, but we couldn’t be more excited to bring Hayes along for our weekend lake adventures. There’s something special about a summer weekend spent on the water, and I’ve rounded up my favorite essentials to make those days comfortable, practical, and fun.
A roomy rubber tote is indispensable for long hours on the boat—it holds towels, sunscreen, snacks, and extra layers without worrying about spills or dampness. A floating cooler is another must-have; it keeps drinks and food cold and stays within easy reach while you relax on inflatables or swim with the kids. For quick cover-ups, I love throwing on a pair of oversized boxers over my swimsuit—the relaxed fit is comfortable and effortless, and a classic striped pair looks especially cute.
When packing for a lake weekend with a baby, prioritize sun protection and comfort. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, breathable swimwear, and a lightweight long-sleeve cover-up for extra sun safety. A portable shade canopy or umbrella can create a cool, shaded spot on the boat or dock where baby can nap or play out of direct sun. Don’t forget plenty of baby-friendly sunscreen, a swim diaper or two, and an extra set of clothes in a waterproof bag in case of splashes and spills.
Practical storage solutions make days on the water smoother. Use waterproof pouches for phones and keys, zip-top bags for diapers and wipes, and insulated containers for breast milk or formula if needed. A compact first-aid kit and insect repellent suitable for little ones should be part of your lake kit as well. Bring a favorite toy or two and a soft blanket to make naptime familiar no matter where you are.
For comfort and convenience, pack multi-use items: a sarong or lightweight towel that doubles as a blanket, an inflatable lounger that can hold both parent and child for calm floating moments, and shoes that are easy to slip on and off for the dock or shoreline. A small Bluetooth speaker adds a pleasant soundtrack to the day, but keep volumes low to respect other boaters and to avoid startling the baby.
Meals and snacks are easier when they’re planned. Pre-make simple, portable items like sandwiches, cut fruit, and snack packs. Keep beverages in reusable, insulated bottles to reduce waste and stay refreshed. If you’ll be out for a long stretch, consider a cooler with separate compartments for perishable baby food and adult snacks to keep everything organized and safe.
Finally, embrace the slower pace. With a little extra planning and the right gear—a durable tote, a floating cooler, comfortable cover-ups, and sun-smart supplies—you can enjoy relaxed, memorable lake weekends with your little one. The days may look different, but they’re just as full of sunshine, laughter, and that sparkling water feeling we love.
