Prenatal Lower Body Workout

Embarking on a vacation offers a wonderful opportunity to recharge, explore new places, and enjoy a change of pace. For me, however, it’s also the perfect chance to invigorate my fitness routine in inspiring new environments. There are two primary reasons why I absolutely love to incorporate workouts into my travel schedule: first, it’s an incredible way to maintain high energy levels and a fantastic mood throughout the trip, ensuring I feel my best and can fully embrace every experience. Second, the gyms found in many vacation resorts, especially luxury destinations, are often unparalleled – truly a fitness enthusiast’s dream!

This commitment to staying active led me to an unforgettable lower body workout session in the breathtaking Maldives. Imagine working out in an insane, state-of-the-art gym, surrounded by the serene beauty of tropical paradise. This particular session was during our babymoon trip (you can read all about our amazing Maldives adventure here), and I was 23 weeks pregnant, feeling strong and empowered. My go-to ensemble for this energetic session was a comfortable and stylish matching set from Rec Sweat in a chic charcoal shade. Below, I’m thrilled to share the detailed breakdown of this invigorating lower body workout, designed to keep you feeling incredible, wherever your travels take you.

The Ultimate Vacation Lower Body Workout: Boost Energy and Strength on the Go

This dynamic workout is structured into two main circuits, each designed to target your lower body muscles from various angles, ensuring a comprehensive and effective session. Whether you’re in a luxurious resort gym or a well-equipped home gym, these exercises are fantastic for building strength, improving stability, and boosting overall fitness. Remember to always listen to your body, especially if you’re pregnant or new to any exercises. A quick 5-10 minute warm-up (light cardio and dynamic stretches) is always recommended before diving in, and don’t forget a cool-down with static stretches afterward.

Circuit 1: Strength and Control (3 Rounds)

Focus on controlled movements and proper form for each repetition in this circuit. Take minimal rest between exercises and a 60-90 second rest between rounds. This circuit emphasizes building foundational strength and muscle endurance.

  • In & Out Goblet Squats x10: A fantastic compound movement for quads, glutes, and core.
  • B Stance Cable RDLs x10 (both sides): Excellent for targeting hamstrings and glutes unilaterally, improving balance.
  • Banded Lunge To Reverse Kick x10: Great for glute activation, hip mobility, and core stability.

Circuit 2: Power and Endurance (30 seconds on, 15 seconds rest. 3-4 rounds.)

This circuit is designed for higher intensity, focusing on power and cardiovascular endurance within the lower body. Work hard during the active periods and use the short rest to prepare for the next movement. Rest for 1-2 minutes between rounds.

  • Standing Crunches With Weight: Engages the core and provides dynamic abdominal work.
  • Sumo Deadlift To Overhead Press: A full-body compound movement that builds strength and power from the ground up.
  • Explosive Jump Squats: Boosts explosive power, builds leg strength, and elevates heart rate for calorie burning.

Deep Dive into Each Movement: Mastering Your Lower Body Workout

In & Out Goblet Squats

The In & Out Goblet Squat is a dynamic variation of the traditional goblet squat, designed to engage your quads, glutes, and core more comprehensively. To perform this movement, hold a dumbbell or kettlebell vertically against your chest (the goblet position). Begin with your feet hip-width apart, then take a wide step out into a squat, lowering your hips as if sitting back into a chair, ensuring your chest remains upright and core engaged. Drive through your heels to return to the standing position, then immediately bring your feet back together, stepping back into a hip-width stance squat. This “in” and “out” motion counts as one repetition, aiming for 10 total. Focus on maintaining a strong, stable core throughout the entire movement, preventing any rounding of the back. The benefits of this exercise include improved lower body strength, enhanced hip mobility, and increased cardiovascular demand due to the continuous motion. It’s also excellent for functional fitness, mimicking everyday movements.

B Stance Cable RDLs (Romanian Deadlifts)

The B Stance Cable RDL is an exceptional exercise for isolating and strengthening the hamstrings and glutes, while also challenging your balance and core stability. Begin with a staggered stance, where one foot is slightly forward and bears approximately 80% of your body weight, with the rear foot acting as a kickstand for support. Grab the cable handle with the hand opposite to your front foot (e.g., if your left foot is forward, use your right hand). Initiate the movement by hinging at your hips, pushing your glutes back as if reaching for a wall behind you, keeping a slight bend in your front knee. Allow a slight, controlled twist toward your front foot as you hinge down; this can deepen the engagement in your glutes and hamstrings. Maintain a neutral spine and feel the stretch in the hamstring of your front leg. Return to the upright position by squeezing your glutes and driving through the heel of your front foot, focusing on control rather than momentum. Perform 10 repetitions on one side before switching to the other. This unilateral exercise helps correct muscular imbalances and builds incredible strength in the posterior chain.

Banded Lunge To Reverse Kick

This dynamic exercise combines the benefits of a lunge with the glute activation of a reverse kick, amplified by the resistance of a band. It’s a fantastic compound movement for strengthening the glutes, quads, and hip flexors, while also improving balance and coordination. To perform, place a resistance band just above your knees. Step back into a reverse lunge with one leg, ensuring your front knee stays aligned over your ankle and your back knee hovers just above the ground. As you push back up from the lunge, immediately drive your trailing leg back and up into a reverse kick, squeezing your glute at the top of the movement. The band adds constant tension, making your muscles work harder throughout the entire range of motion. I personally never travel without my 3-piece band set from Rec Sweat, which includes light, medium, and heavy resistance options. For this specific movement, I found the light resistance band ideal, as it allows for a greater range of motion and emphasizes control during the kick. This exercise is incredibly effective for shaping and strengthening the glutes and outer thighs.

Standing Crunches With Weight

Don’t underestimate the power of standing core work! Standing Crunches with Weight are an excellent way to engage your abdominal muscles while standing, making them highly functional and versatile, especially in environments where floor space might be limited or simply as a refreshing alternative to traditional crunches. To execute, hold a dumbbell or weight plate with both hands above your head or at your chest. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent. As you inhale, allow your belly to expand naturally. Then, as you exhale, powerfully draw your core in tight, crunching your upper body slightly forward and down, simultaneously squeezing your glutes. The key is to feel the contraction in your abs, rather than just bending forward. Control the movement both down and up. This exercise not only strengthens your rectus abdominis but also helps improve posture and core stability, which are crucial for all other movements and daily activities. The added weight increases the challenge, promoting greater muscle engagement and strength development.

Sumo Deadlift To Overhead Press

The Sumo Deadlift to Overhead Press is a powerful, full-body compound exercise that combines lower body strength with upper body power and core stability. It’s an incredibly efficient movement for building overall strength and conditioning. Begin with a wide stance, significantly wider than shoulder-width, with your toes pointed slightly outwards. Position a dumbbell or kettlebell between your feet. Hinge through your hips, keeping your back straight and chest up, to grip the weight. Drive through your heels and stand up, engaging your glutes and hamstrings for the sumo deadlift portion. As you reach the upright position, seamlessly transition into an overhead press, pushing the weight directly above your head until your arms are fully extended. Control the weight as you lower it back to the starting position, reversing the movement with precision. This exercise effectively targets the inner thighs, glutes, hamstrings, back, shoulders, and triceps, while demanding strong core engagement throughout. It’s a fantastic exercise for developing explosive power and improving coordination between your upper and lower body.

Explosive Jump Squats

Explosive Jump Squats are a high-intensity plyometric exercise designed to build incredible lower body power, improve athletic performance, and significantly boost your cardiovascular fitness. Start in a regular squat stance, feet shoulder-width apart, chest up, and core engaged. Lower yourself into a squat position, ensuring your thighs are parallel to the ground. From the bottom of the squat, explode upwards with maximum force, pushing through your heels and extending your hips, knees, and ankles. Aim to get as much air as possible. Land softly back into a squat position, absorbing the impact through your legs to protect your joints, and immediately transition into the next jump. Repeat this motion for the total prescribed time in Circuit 2. If you’re looking for a modification or are new to plyometrics, you can opt for regular bodyweight squats, focusing on speed and control, or reduce the jump height. This exercise is fantastic for increasing vertical jump, improving speed, and burning a significant amount of calories, making it a staple for any power-focused lower body workout.

Why Embrace Workouts While Traveling: Maintain Your Wellness Journey

Integrating fitness into your vacation isn’t just about burning calories; it’s about enhancing your entire travel experience. When you maintain a semblance of your fitness routine, you combat the potential sluggishness that can accompany travel. Workouts boost endorphins, which are natural mood elevators, helping you feel happier and more relaxed, even amidst travel stresses. This means you’ll have more energy to explore, enjoy activities, and make the most of your trip. Furthermore, finding joy in physical activity can be a powerful stress reliever and a fantastic way to prevent the “vacation slump” that sometimes hits upon returning home. It also offers a unique opportunity to experience new fitness facilities, like the incredible gym I found in the Maldives, or to simply enjoy outdoor activities in stunning new landscapes.

Beyond the immediate benefits, maintaining your wellness journey while traveling reinforces healthy habits and personal discipline. It shows that fitness is a sustainable lifestyle, not just a task. Whether it’s a quick circuit in a hotel room, a run on the beach, or a full session at a resort gym, every active choice contributes to your overall well-being. Plus, it can be a great way to justify indulging in some of those delicious local cuisines without guilt! With simple, adaptable workouts like this lower body circuit, you can stay on track with your fitness goals, no matter how far you roam.

Travel-Friendly Fitness Essentials: Your Go-To Gear

One of the keys to successful vacation workouts is having the right, compact equipment. This lower body workout, for example, heavily leverages the versatility of resistance bands. I cannot stress enough the importance of packing a good set of resistance bands. My 3-piece set from Rec Sweat, featuring light, medium, and heavy resistances, is an absolute travel staple. These bands are incredibly lightweight, take up minimal space in luggage, and can transform almost any bodyweight exercise into a challenging strength-building movement. They’re perfect for activating glutes, adding resistance to squats and lunges, and providing an effective workout even when traditional weights aren’t available.

Equally important is comfortable and functional workout attire. A good matching set, like the charcoal one from Rec Sweat I wore in the Maldives, isn’t just about style; it’s about feeling confident and unrestricted during your movements. Investing in quality activewear that supports you through various exercises will make your vacation workouts far more enjoyable and effective. With these simple essentials, you’re fully equipped to maintain your fitness routine and feel amazing, no matter your destination.
